OMG PD: A Look at Odd Crimes in Our Patch Region

This week: "Michael Jordan flip flops," scootering under the influence, and lots of angry family members.

Local police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please e-mail the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

Officers said they immediately detected a “strong odor of cannabis emitting from the vehicle.” The 16-year-old driver told police he had been “chilling” with friends and was on his way to play basketball.

Police noticed he was wearing flip-flops and asked him how he intended to play basketball. “They are the new Michael Jordan flip-flops,” he replied. “I can play basketball in them, not to jump, but just to move around.”

The teen later failed a field sobriety test and admitted to smoking marijuana an hour earlier. Officers also uncovered more than 14 grams of cannabis inside the vehicle.

A Melrose Park man was driving through River Forest and playing his music so loud that officers said they couldn’t help but notice that he was driving westbound on the center line of North Avenue.

A Skokie man who was eating carryout with his brother allegedly told his brother that he was going to “stab the first person to drop rice on the floor.”

Apparently he wasn’t kidding.

Shortly afterward, police say he began waving a large steak knife at his brother, who yelled: “Dude, calm down.” The first brother ignored the plea and allegedly stabbed his brother in the left hand.

The injured brother ran upstairs, called police and told his mother what happened. Their mom later confronted the alleged offender, who told her that he was tired of his brother's uncleanness.

Police arrested a Northbrook teen June 17 after he was allegedly staggering drunkenly down Woodlawn Road and hitting things with a Razor scooter.

When police spotted the teen, he ran away and climbed to the roof of a home. He then fell or jumped from the highest part of the roof and landed on the ground, where officers took him into custody.

According to police, the teen smelled strongly of alcohol. While in custody, he appeared to pass out briefly and was taken to the hospital. While there, he turned over a plastic bag containing cannabis to an officer, saying it belonged to him.

Officers said they later found a damaged lamp post and the scooter laying abandoned on Woodlawn Road.

A woman hit another woman in the face at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston on June 19. The incident involved family members visiting a sick relative.

A Niles woman reported to police June 16 that a movie and pornography channel were added to her satellite dish television account, and that she hadn't authorized them. In the past, she has asked to have these channels removed, only to have them show up on her account again.
