State's Attorney: Promise of Sex Lured Carjacking Victim

Bond remains at $300,000 for Crystal Perez following a crime spree that left one dead.

According to new details released in court yesterday, the of a 22-year-old man in Glenview allegedly started with promises of sex from an ex-girlfriend.

Crystal Perez, 19, of Glenview, and a second assailant, Christopher Walsh, 20, of Chicago, allegedly lured the victim to Perez’s home, said in the Skokie branch of Cook County Court yesterday. Morris told the court how the victim was abducted at knife point, forced into the back seat of his car and taken for a drive.

According to police reports, the victim was dropped off in Evanston around 1:30 a.m. and called police to tell authorities of his circumstances. When pursued by officers, Perez and Walsh attempted to flee. A high speed chase ensued, ending in a crash at China Chef in Morton Grove that left Perez injured and Walsh dead.

on one count of aggravated kidnapping and one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking April 29.

After Perez pleaded not guilty at her arraignment yesterday, attorney John Romano asked Judge Garritt Howard to reduce the amount of Perez’s bail--set at $300,000 on April 14—because she has no criminal record, he argued. Judge Howard denied Romano’s request.

opposed the modification, citing the severity of the charges.

“The defendant (Perez) used text messages to lure the victim to her home and promised him sex,” Morris said. “When [the victim] got there, she handed her partner (Walsh) the wire used to bind the victim. [The victim] was told he was going to die that day.”

“While I concede the defendant has no criminal record, she is a threat,” Morris continued. “When she’s driving 85 miles per hour she is a threat to anybody on the road.”

Medical Grievance

Romano’s primary argument to the court for a reduction of bail was the lack of medical care Perez was receiving for her injuries in the Cermak Hospital Unit of Cook County Jail where she remains in custody unable to post the $30,000 cash portion of her $300,000 bond.

“She has micro fractures in her spine,” Romano said. “She has been seen only once at Cermak. They haven’t provided pain medication.” He also described torn muscles and ligaments in his plea for less bail.

Though Howard said he could not order doctors at Cook County jail to treat Perez, he made it clear she should receive the medical treatment she needs.

“She should be seen at Cermak,” Howard said. “She should receive what she needs for pain issues.”

The case is set for status at 9:30 a.m. June 1 in the Skokie branch of Cook County Circuit Court.
