UPDATE: Attorney Hopes for Settlement Conference In Case of Glenview Dispatcher Caught Naked on Camera

Judge Calabrese will hear oral arguments from both attorneys on April 26.

The attorney for the Glenview police, fire and public safety dispatcher accused of running naked through his Chicago apartment building last year asked a judge today to convene a settlement conference for his client.

Steven Delatorre was while at work at the Glenview Police Station Feb. 1. Delatorre was booked on after appearing in court to answer the first two. He now faces seven misdemeanor counts of public indecency.

Delatorre’s attorney, Joe Roddy, asked Judge Anthony John Calabrese to convene a settlement conference under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 402.

“The judge acts as a mediator [under Rule 402] and tells both sides how he sees the case,” Roddy said, also explaining that this type of procedure can often resolve a case.

Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Matthew Heinlen refused to participate in the 402 hearing. “The parties are too far apart,” he said.

According to Roddy, Heinlen contends a 402 conference is only appropriate when the parties have a plea agreement. Roddy said there is no need for mediation when the parties agree.

Also important to the case is the number of potential convictions Delatorre could receive. according to Chicago Police Detective Karen La Palermo.

Roddy said he hopes the judge would persuade the prosecution to resolve the matter in a way favorable to Delatorre during the 402 conference. “Otherwise we go to trial.”

Two prosecution witnesses—a man and a woman—appeared in court ready to testify today.

Heinlen asked Calabrese to excuse the witnesses from appearing April 26. Calabrese agreed.

“Stay in touch with them,” he said. “I don’t want them to wake up one morning and find out the case has gone away.”

Calabrese will hear arguments from Roddy and Heinlen at 9 a.m. April 26 in Branch 29 of criminal court, 2542 West Belmont Avenue, Chicago. He’s expected to decide whether to convene a 402 conference that day.
