County President Blasts Glenview Ordinance

Glenview's new ordinance gives landlords the option to opt-out of the Section 8 program.

Glenview's recent landlord ordinance giving local property owners the right to deny section 8 residents from renting property is now under fire from Cook County President, Toni Preckwinkle, the Journal & Topics reports.

Glenview’s new policy allows landlords to arbitrarily deny housing to individuals and families who have legitimate sources of income,” Preckwinkle wrote in a statement, according to the Journal & Topics. “Glenview’s position contradicts a growing national trend among local government entities to remove barriers to integration and economic opportunity. It also interferes with Cook County’s efforts to extend fair housing.”

The Village of Glenview previously defended its decision in a statement that said, "the ordinance adopted by the Village of Glenview does not prohibit the use of Section 8 housing assistance vouchers in the Village and does not, in any way, violate federal, state or county fair housing laws. It simply restored a landlord’s choice as to whether to participate in such a program."
