Fine Helped Push School Gun Violence Protection Law

Illinois Senate Bill 1625 requires schools to develop an evacuation or reverse evacuation plan for possible shooting incidents.

Legislation supported by state Rep. Laura Fine (D-Glenview) requiring schools to implement and practice a response to a gunman entering a building was recently signed into law, according to a press release from Fine's office.

Senate Bill 1625 requires schools to develop an evacuation or reverse evacuation plan for possible shooting incidents.

“This is a strong measure aimed at increasing school safety,” Fine said in the release. “This legislation can help ensure students, teachers, administrators and law enforcement all know how to react if the unthinkable happens. These safety drills will help protect our children and schools.”

Under this new law, local law enforcement officials will be asked to coordinate this drill with students and staff at schools. After participating in the drill, law enforcement will provide each school a report with suggested improvements to their safety plan.

“When children and adults have practiced how to act in an emergency, they are better prepared for the unthinkable and unexpected,” Fine said in the release. “We are teaching our children who to trust in emergency situations and giving the police the opportunity to learn the layout and design of their local schools.”
