Fine Votes To Reduce Lawmaker Salaries

"Lawmakers must be willing to lead by example," Laura Fine, the state rep from Glenview, said in a press release.

Last week state Rep. Laura Fine (D-Glenview) continued her efforts to reduce state spending by voting to reduce the salaries for herself and other elected officials, according to a press release.

“The state is facing many serious challenges and lawmakers must be willing to lead by example when looking to rein in state spending,” Fine said in the release. “By voting to cut the pay of state legislators and freeze reimbursements, lawmakers are doing their own small part while working toward a solution.”

House Bill 1441 requires lawmakers to work for less pay, eliminates cost of living adjustments and freezes per diem reimbursement rates. The bill also prohibits cost of living adjustments for other elected officials including state’s attorneys, constitutional officers and several appointed officials.

The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

“While Illinois is trying to pay-down a backlog of bills and reducing services for seniors and children, elected officials must be willing to do their part,” Fine said. “As long as Illinois still has bills to pay, cutting the salaries of elected officials is the right thing to do.”
