Glenview District 34 Revises Lunch Options

Meal guidelines have changed for the 2012 - 2013 school year in accordance with the USDA's Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.

The following school notes were provided by District 34.

School meal guidelines have changed for the 2012-13 school year due to the passage of the USDA’s Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act. The school meals will follow the MyPlate model, which means students will be asked to choose a fruit or vegetable with their meal.

Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories. Additionally, the fiber in fruits and vegetables fills students up with healthy food so that students eat less of other foods. Therefore, including fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet can help students feel more satisfied after meals.

People who eat more generous portions of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet compared to those who only consume a small amount have a decreased risk for many chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and type-2 diabetes.

There are several resources explaining the meals the Food Service Department offers, including nutritional information, online. The cycle menu nutrient analysis information section provides a detailed break down of the meals served. There are also links to an allergy guide, the districts food (snack) guidelines, classroom/team party food guidelines and student account information.
