Glenview Road Resurfacing Project Begins

Officials say resurfacing the 1.2-mile stretch of Glenview Road should be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.

Motorists will see construction activity pick up on a 1.2-mile stretch of Glenview Road over the next month or so, which will cause delays in traffic, but no road closures, officials said recently.

The $950,000 project to resurface Glenview Road east to village limits at Long Road is scheduled for completion by the end of October if the weather permits, said Joe Kenney, village director of capital projects.

"It will be four to six weeks of minor utility, curb and gutter work," Kenney explained. "By early October, the resurfacing will start and then two weeks or so of paving."

Arrow Road Construction of Mount Prospect will complete the work, which will include repairing sanitary, storm and water main systems, some curb and sidewalk replacement and new asphalt surfacing, according to a recent statement.

Since 2009, the village has been able to get about 60 percent of the $4 million total cost to resurface Glenview Road, the statement said. The work was done in segments over the last two years.

Kenney doesn't anticipate closures on Glenview Road, noting that if there is work in one lane, flaggers will be on hand to make sure motorists get safely through the area. However, drivers should plan for some delays as the work picks up during construction hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"With a resurfacing project of this scope, [the road] should never be fully closed, just slow from time to time," Kenney added.

Other construction projects include:

  • Repairs to the Union Pacific railroad bridge, which has closed Shermer Road between Holste and Willow roads since the end of June, are scheduled to be completed for the road to reopen Oct. 1, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
  • The Chestnut Avenue just east of Lehigh Avenue is closed through Sept. 7 while Metra crews make repairs to the grade crossing. Detours direct motorists intending to go west on Chestnut Avenue to instead take Waukegan Road to Lake Avenue and then to Patriot Boulevard. Pedestrians cannot walk over the tracks, and are asked instead to cross the tracks through the Glen of North Glenview train station.

Kenney said a -- with a total of 30 rain days -- caused some delays overall in the construction season, but the village is back on schedule.

"All of the project schedules had to be adjusted to accommodate the weather, but we're back on track," he said. "It looks like all the projects slated to be completed this year will be done on time."
