Think Eco-Friendly, Recycle Your Batteries

The Solid Waste Agency of North Cook County's new recycling program is in full swing.

Instead of letting batteries end up in a landfill, SWANCC has teamed up with Interstate Batteries in Skokie, opening drop-off stations at various suburban locations for dead batteries. 

After many calls from residents about what to do with dead batteries, SWANNC began to seek an option for its suburban residents. When Interstate Batteries was asked to jump on board with the plan, managers say it was a no-brainer.

“They have a good exposure to a lot of junk,” said James Demos, manager at Interstate Batteries. 

By teaming up with the Skokie business, SWANCC will collect batteries throughout the northern suburbs and then ship those batteries off to a recycling center so they can be used all over again.

Before dumping old batteries, the new recycling group is asking residents to follow a few guidelines including taping over the ends of the batteries and putting them in individual plastic baggies to avoid any sparking.

At this time, the following batteries are being accepted:

Alkaline: A, AAA, C, D, 9V
Rechargeable: NiCd, NiMh, lithium ion, lithium polymer

Old Medications and sharps are also being accepted for recycling.
