October 9 marked the start of a two-week Festival of Programs to celebrate the opening of the new Glenview Public Library. Library construction has been in the works since Nov. 2008 and completion of the project was celebrated Saturday with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1930 Glenview Road.

The library's Festival of Programs showcases the library's new facilities and offerings, explained Library Communications Director Jennifer Black.

"The Festival will introduce the community to a unique blend of cultural experiences for all ages," adds Library Director Vickie Novak "Our goal is to help patrons explore the rich diversity of all that the library has to offer."

The highly anticipated ribbon cutting attracted shoulder-to-shoulder patrons and a line of people out the library doors.

"I'm truly amazed," said Novak. "I think this exceeds our expectations."

The library expanded its facilities more than 35,000 square feet (the original library was nearly 51,000 square feet and the new facility comes in around 85,000). Among the library's new features, a fireplace surrounded by large chairs for reading, a "teen scene" for young adult visitors and a colorfully decorated children's area appeared to be community favorites.

"We've been dying to come," said Glenview resident Bonny Lundin-Scheer. "I'm not surprised to see the crowds because people are really excited."

Scheer and her family described themselves as library regulars and enjoy participating in library events including one of their most recent favorites, the model train exhibit. Most frequently, the Scheers check out audio books because they can listen to a variety of stories as a family on the go, Bonny said.

Another Glenview resident and ribbon-cutting attendee, Mary Ann Topping said she and her now-grown children were frequent users of the library and are excited for new generations of children to enjoy the updated space.

"I'm a little sad that my children won't get to enjoy the library [as small children]," she said.
