Too Soon For Village Trustees to Announce if Cuts Will Be Made

Village will hold first budget meeting Sept. 22 and hopes to finalize the 2011 services budget by December.

With many municipalities facing cuts in services, the Village of Glenview is taking measures to keep the public informed about how tax dollars will be used in the 2011 budget.

"It's too early to know whether service level cuts will be proposed, but the village's primary concern is to maintain service levels for our citizens," said Janet Spector Bishop, the village's communications director.

Residents will get an opportunity to discuss the spending plans with officials during a series of public meetings during the fall.

The first meeting is Sept. 22 with the annual capital improvement projects workshop, "where residents can learn if their street is scheduled for resurfacing and reconstruction in 2011," Bishop said.

The village is proposing to resurface or reconstruct several smaller neighborhood roads, she said. Another project is the design process to improve the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Waukegan Road.

"[The] Village is also hoping to wrap up one of the major flood-control projects, including the installation of a sanitary sewer in the east part of town [east of Harms Road]," Bishop added.

On Oct. 28, a forum will be held on cuts and other changes to the operating budget's corporate fund. Such items as staff expenses, electricity costs, purchases, legal services, repair expenses, contracts, senior services and the 911 dispatch center are financed through the fund, according to Bishop.

Sessions are planned Nov. 9 for both the capital improvements budget and the water and sewers budget.

A week later, the Village Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Village Hall, 1225 Waukegan Rd., to finalize any remaining budget details. Board members hope to approve the 2011 budget in December.

Residents are encouraged to bring their concerns to all the meetings, Bishop said. They can call 847-904-4370 for meeting times and additional information.
