Township Food Pantry Introduces Client Choice Distribution

Northfield Township supervisor Jill Brickman has proposed an adjustment to the township's food pantry distribution model, introducing a possible "client choice" format instead of distributing pre-determined food packages to families in Glenview, Northbrook and Northfield. 

“Clients will still receive the same amount of food but they are able to choose items off the shelves with the help of a volunteer instead of receiving a prepackaged bag,” Brickman said in a press release. “The food pantry is supplied fully by private donations. I am always looking for ways to avoid any waste of food and ultimately looking for a lower cost of food provided.”

The idea is based on a national model Brickman thinks could improve efficiency at the food pantry and stretch finances received from private donations. 

"The proposal matches dietary needs to those who are most vulnerable and counters a one-size-fits-all approach," according to a township press release.

The proposed model would let clients choose their own food from the pantry, much like a grocery store. Currently, clients receive fixed food packages without the opportunity to choose items. 

“Client choice is an important step which shows a real respect for our clients," Brickman said in the release. "Choosing the appropriate food for their families preserves their dignity and allows them to make their own nutritional decisions.”
