September is National Preparedness Month. Over the next 30 days I'll provide 30 ways to assist residents to become better prepared for emergencies in order to protect themselves and their families.

Continuing on to identify 30 ways in 30 days for individuals and families to become better prepared for emergencies, I have stressed the importance of having a Family Emergency Plan.

This week I'll address ways that you can protect yourhousehold, by having early access to credible information, as well as what youcan do to help protect yourself and your family in the event of an emergency or disaster affecting your home.

The single best investment you can make in order to protect yourself and your
family is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WEATHER RADIO-ALL HAZARDS for your home.

NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information. Information on the NWR network is broadcast directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts official Weather Service warnings, watches, as well as forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In conjunction with Federal, State, and Local Emergency Managers and other public officials, NWR also broadcasts pre-event alarms with alert warnings and post-event information for all types of hazards – including natural (such as flash fling), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 Telephone outages.

Depending on features a NOAA NWR radio will range in price from as little as $2 to as much as $60, and can be purchased locally at most Walgreen’s, Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe’s Stores as well as shopping club facilities like Sam’s Club and Costco. They can be purchased on-line as well through Amazon, and other on-line retailers, and some sources such as Craig’s List may have used devices as well.

An early alert warning system may afford you the opportunity to take protective
actions in advance, and as a result may save you and your family from severe
injury, and may just save your life!
