District 34 Enrollment Up 222 Students

District's enrollment experiences highest increase since 1962.

Enrollment increased by 222 students throughout District 34 this school year, a number which marks the most enrollment has grown in a single year since 1962.

Last year's district enrollment increased by 176 students. Collectively, the nearly 400 additional students in the two-year span represents a nine percent total increase.

"In many school districts, 400 students represents a new school," Superintendent Dr. Gerald Hill indicated.  "It is one of the reasons we currently have eight mobile classroom units across the district. This is a challenge we need to study and plan for as we look to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning rather than warehousing students."

In light of this significant increase, the district is considering potential boundary changes to relieve some of the pressure on specific schools including Henking and Hoffman, according to a press release distributed today. Currently, there are 574 students at Henking and 587 students at Hoffman.

The boundary committee is scheduled to report recommendations and potential short-term solutions to the Board of Education during its February meeting. Parents, teachers and administrators will participate in the committee.
