Stoich-A-Thon raises donations at GBS

This chain reaction is for a good cause. Glenbrook South’s fourth annual Stoich-A-Thon will have students looking for sponsors to support them in a unique chemistry problem-solving “marathon.”

Approximately 250 chemistry students will participate in the event - happening all-day Friday, January 10 in the Student Activity Center - to raise money for financially challenged students. Last year, Stoich-A-Thon raised $3,000 and created 150 vouchers for counselors to distribute to students looking for assistance purchasing GBS spirit apparel or tickets to events.

“The chemistry students set a class goal, typically 300-400 chemistry problems total that they will try to solve in a 50-minute class period,” said Cheryl Simon, GBS Science instructor. “They race to solve as many problems as they can in a 50-minute class and there is a competition between individuals and classes for most problems solved.”

GBS winter play shows power of drama

This year's winter play at Glenbrook South will be "Circle Mirror Transformation" by Annie Baker.

One of the most performed plays in the country, this contemporary production traces the lives of several small-town Vermont residents who gather each week for an acting class taught at the local community center. With a small 5-person cast, each part at GBS will be double cast and students will rotate between shows for a different dynamic and energy at each performance.

“The play takes place in a community drama class and none of the participants are professional actors but all of them find by trying exercises that their lives are transformed,” said play director John Knight. “It shows the important power of drama and how anyone, regardless of background, can take something of value from theatre.”

The 90-minute intimate performance will take place in the Drama Dance Room at Glenbrook South High School.  Show times are January 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. and January 24 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $7.

Medical Equipment/ Recycling Drive

GBS will present the 7th Annual Interact Computer/Medical Equipment Recycling Drive on Saturday, January 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the front entrance of GBS.

Hosted in conjunction with Assistive Technology Exchange Network, a program ofUnited Cerebral Palsy of Greater Chicago, the event offers a win-win opportunity for those looking to get rid of old computer equipment or medical equipment like wheel chairs, walkers, etc.

Any donated items will either be refurbished and used by Illinois children and adults afflicted by Cerebral Palsy, or be recycled as "environmentally friendly" as possible. Donators will receive a Tax Form to use as a write-off for 2014.
