GBS Hockey Grabs Weekend Win

Titans optimistic despite being in fifth place in Metro North Division.

Despite falling behind early in its game against Warren Township High School this weekend, Glenbrook South's hockey team rallied for a 3-1 victory against the Blue Devils, at the Glenview Ice Center.

Warren took a quick 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game, on a rebound goal by George Dousmanis. After that, South got down to business.

Exactly 10 minutes later, the Titans tied the game when assistant captain Billy Savino pumped a shot home past Warren goalie Jared Ornelas on a power play.

"Billy (Savino) has been one of our standouts this season," South coach Jim Philbin said. "Overall I thought we were a bit sluggish tonight, but we regrouped and had a decent third period as well."

The Titans took the lead for good with 2:44 remaining in the opening period, when Tim Feit ripped a rebound goal home, following a shot from the top of the near circle from senior captain Jimmy Philbin. Philbin also assisted on Eric Davis' goal — which gave the Titans a 3-1 lead on a two-man advantage — early in the second period.

Philbin also leads the Metro North Division in scoring with 17 goals and 15 assists. With the win, the Titans improved to 14-7-2 overall.

"I've been on the varsity team since my freshman year," Philbin said. "Our line with me, Savino and Davis have been working well together.

He gave one specific reason for his individual success so far this year.

"Hard work," Philbin said. "If we want to be successful as a team, we have to work hard every shift. Tonight, I think us scoring on the two-man advantage was a turning point. Were gonna make big things happen in the playoffs in March."

South goalie Reid McMahon stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced for the win. Special teams were also key, as the Titans finished 2-for-6 on the power play.
