GBS Ranked 20th Best IL High School

U.S. News and World Report has named Glenbrook South High School the 20th best high school in the state in its 2014 ranking, which was released this week.

The top four schools are all Chicago selective enrollment high schools. Adlai E. Stevenson in Lincolnshire was No. 5 and Deerfield High School No. 6. You can view the full list here.

Deerfield and Highland Park, at No. 10, are the only North Shore schools to make it into the top 10. But local schools dominated the next 10 spots, with New Trier ranked No. 15, Glenbrook North No. 16, Vernon Hills No. 17, Buffalo Grove No. 18 and Glenbrook South No. 20.

Nationally, Glenbrook South was ranked No. 503.

The methodology, which was unchanged since last year, looks at three main factors to decide a school’s ranking: whether students are performing better than statistically expected for the average student in the state; whether disadvantaged students are performing better in math and reading than the state average for their peers; and the school’s “college-readiness” performance, based on AP or International Baccalaureate test data.

In Illinois, the Prairie State Achievement Examination is used to gauge student performance to determine the ranking.
