GBS Test Scores At All Time High

A recent Illinois report card measuring Glenbrook South's performance compared to other schools, found them scoring more than four points higher on the ACT than the state average.

According to the 2013 Illinois School Report Cards released by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), students at both Glenbrook high schools perform consistently better than the state average, according to a District 225 press release.

Glenbrook South students earned their highest collective average composite score on the ACT exam in the school’s history with a 24.9 out of 36. GBS’s average scores in all of the academic areas tested increased as well, with the most notable increases in English and Reading.

GBN students posted an average composite score of 25.8, consistent with last year’s score of 25.9.

The scores for both schools would have been higher, but ACT recently changed the advertised school score by including scores for students who received ACT-approved testing accommodations.

The state average composite score is 20.6.

“While test scores are not the only way we measure the success of our students, they do provide confirmation that the efforts we are making are having a positive impact on student achievement,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle said in the press release.

The Report Card lists the total enrollment of the Glenbrook High Schools as 4,821. The district graduation rate is 97.8 percent. On average, 96 to 97 percent of Glenbrook graduates attend college.

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) sets annual targets for student achievement on the Illinois Prairie State Achievement Exams (PSAE).  For 2013, 92.5 percent of all student subgroups must meet or exceed standards on PSAE testing in order for the school to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  The target level rises each year, and in 2014, 100 percent of students are expected to meet or exceed standards.

NCLB specifically measures the progress of nine subgroups of students including the following: Racial/Ethnic Background, Limited English Proficient, Students with Disabilities and Economically Disadvantaged.

Based on the performance of some subgroups, GBN, GBS, and the district did not meet AYP for 2013.

The official State Report Cards will be posted on the district website (www.glenbrook225.org) by Oct. 31, 2013.
