Football: Titan Defense Has Glenbrook South In Position for Playoff Run

Most people focus on Glenbrook South's dominating running attack, but the Titan defense has been a big part of the team's success this year.

Ask any opposing coach to give the scouting report on and they will usually start with the running game. With a big offensive line paving the way for the Titans’ three-headed running attack, the offense gets a lot of credit for Glenbrook South’s success.

But this season the defense has also been a driving source behind the Titans’ 8-2 record. And it showed in Glenbrook South’s 27-0 win over New Trier in the first round of the playoffs.

“Shutting out New Trier, that’s a big feat, especially considering last game we played them…we didn’t get a shutout and this game we just wanted to improve on last game,” Glenbrook South running back Alex Leet said. “Our defense just shut them down.”

Glenbrook South forced three turnovers in the second half against New Trier and forced the Trevians to rely exclusively on the passing game. Sully Stadler picked off a tipped pass from New Trier QB Jack Nykaza and the Titans recovered two Trevian fumbles to put the game away.

“They played very well. We were very prepared and our kids were all over their reads,” Glenbrook South coach Mike Noll said. “They just did a good job. We didn’t give them anything all night. We gave them a little here and there, but then we shut it down. It was good.”

In 10 games this year, Glenbrook South has yielded more than 20 points only once, surrendering 45 against three-time defending state champion Maine South. The defensive efforts haven’t come against weak opposition either. Prospect. Stevenson, Evanston and New Trier were all playoff teams, but failed to put up more than 17 points against the Titan defense.

The Titans have been getting better as the season has gone on, posting two shutouts – against Niles West and New Trier – in their last three games. But Glenbrook South will have its hands full with Lyons, which scored 45 points in its win over Bartlett in the first round.

Yet Leet is optimistic that the defense will again step up and set the tone early on.

“They always play so hard and they bring the physicality,” Leet said. “People are scared of this defense for a reason, because we hit harder than everybody else.”
