GBS Boys Soccer Preview

A look at Titans soccer

At a Glance:
Head Coach: Paul Agombar
2009 record: 8-12-3 overall, 0-5 conference
Lost in the regional semifinal

2010 record: 3-1-2

Last year was one of year of "firsts" in many areas for the Glenbrook South boys soccer team. Paul Agombar was in his first year as head coach, the team's 4-0 start was one of its best ever and an eight game losing streak was one of its worst in school history.

The last season struggles were focused around midfielder Luke Harrison. Harrison, now a senior, missed the final 11 games after he suffered a concussion in a 7-0 win over St. Edward.

The Titans stumbled without Harrison, finishing the remainder of the season 2-8-1.

The soccer team lost six starters to graduation, including three solid defenders in Shawn Michols, Matt Condon and Peter Riley. However, with Harrison back, Agombar is looking forward to the season.

"I think we have a deeper roster this year. Harrison looks good," the coach said.

The Titans return five starters including Harrison. Goalkeeper David Abiera, Nathan Park, Branden McGarrity and John Leigh will try to provide the veteran leadership.

Glenbrook South started the season in style with a 2-1 victory at Rolling Meadows. Connor Freedman scored the decisive goal in the second half. Harrison scored in the first half.

The Titans then drew to Stevenson and Loyola in the second and third matches of the year.

Following their first defeat to Mather 3-2, the Titans are on a two match winning streak beating Niles North 3-1 and Vernon Hills 6-0.

Date to circle on your calendar: Sept. 30 at New Trier.

The Trevians were ranked fourth in the Sun-Times' preseason Top 10.
