GIRLS GOLF: Titans End Record-Setting Season in Sectional Championships

Glenbrook South shot the lowest regional score in school history, but didn't advance past the sectional championships.

After finishing their rounds at Tuesday’s Class AA Buffalo Grove Sectional, Glenbrook South’s six golfers stuck around to scoreboard watch.

None of the Titans’ golfers were moving on to the state championships, but they wanted to know what it would take to be on the other side of the cut line. Lucky for them, they’ll get another chance next season.

A young Glenbrook South team finished 11th out of 12 teams at the sectional, with the top four golfers combining to shoot 363 on the par-74 golf course at Buffalo Grove. Highland Park (305) won the sectional championship while Prospect (319) and Fremd (324) also moved on to this weekend’s state tournament.

“We didn’t do as well as we had hoped, but we had a good otherwise so we’re not totally down on ourselves,” Glenbrook South coach Kelly Lowery said. “We had a very competitive sectional.”

Junior Dambi Kim led the Titans with an 85 while junior Lin Koop was the only other golfer to break 90 with an 89. Sophomore Lauren Choi (94) and junior Tammy Song (95) also figured in the scoring for Glenbrook South. Junior Madison Gately (96) and junior Rachel Kim (101) rounded out the team scores. Kim was closest to making the cut as an individual, finishing six shots off the cut line of 79.

Glenbrook South’s disappointing sectional performance came just a week after setting a school record in the regional championships. The Titans shot 348, finishing third at the Hoffman Estates Regional behind Prospect and Fremd. Koop led the way with a 79, tying for fourth place overall.

“We were thrilled. We set team goals early in the season and one of the goals the girls set was to qualify the whole team out of the regional and into the sectional,” Lowery said. “Accomplishing that in itself was phenomenal. We shot some of our best golf and everyone came together at the same time.”

With no seniors in this year’s postseason lineup, Glenbrook South will have a rare shot at a second chance and an opportunity to improve on this season’s finale. Lowery will run a golf camp in the summer, but most of the players will do a lot of work on their own.

“The girls have a lot to be proud of,” Lowery said. “We’re a younger team; they’re on the brink of doing something really great next year. Assuming the offseason goes as we would hope, I think next season we can really make the strides that we’re hoping to.”
