Glenbrook South Boys Basketball Preview

After a sub-par 2010-2011 season, Glenbrook South will have to replace its top two scorers from last year.

Because of injuries and a lack of size in the middle, struggled in the second half of the 2010-2011 season, finishing with an 8-19 record (1-9 CSL South). The Titans were bounced in the regional quarterfinals 46-31 by Schaumburg.

While the loss of key starters takes away the Titans’ 1-2 scoring duo from last year, Glenbrook South does return three starters this season.

Glenbrook South will again be a smaller team this season, and will look to push the tempo and score in transition. Defending against strong post players, like New Trier’s Connor Boehm, will present a stiff challenge.

Other than preseason favorite New Trier, many of the CSL South’s teams lost a lot of players to graduation. If the Titans can develop some depth, they should be able to easily improve on their 1-9 conference record from last year.

GLENBROOK SOUTH TITANS BOYS BASKETBALL

Coach: Scott Nemecek

2010-2011 Highlights: 2nd place at the (lost to Lake Park in final). Won the consolation championship at the Elgin Holiday Tournament over Batavia.

Returning Starters: Jamie Nikitas (6’1”, 185lb, Sr.) – 8 ppg last year; Justin Busiel (6’4”, 185lb, Jr.) – 10ppg last year; Victor Levi (6’4”, 200lb, Sr.) – 9 ppg last year

Other Notable Varsity Players: Matt Powers (6’3”, 190lb, Sr.), Max Cohen (5’8”, 175lb, Jr.), Matt Siegel (6’2”, 180lb, Jr.)

Keys for GBS: “We need to maintain defensive pressure as a smaller and faster team, take five charges a game, become very physical on defensive rebounds,” Nemecek said. “We need to score in transition and not allow defense to anchor itself; run sets well when needed.”

Concerns for GBS: “Foul trouble or physical exhaustion to top 3-5 players as we are not very deep,” Nemecek said. “As a small team we can’t allow people to run the sets they want to run; sometimes we become very plain on defense.”

Notes: Ryan is now a freshman preferred walk-on at Stanford. McMahon is a freshman on the junior varsity team at Hope College (Michigan). Levi played for the Chicagoland Jewish Maccabi team that traveled overseas this summer and was selected to play with the national Jewish Maccabi team.
