Glenbrook South Defeats Rival Glenbrook North, 28-14

The Titans win their fifth straight over the Spartans.

In some games, the toughest opposition is yourself. This was the case for the friday evening when they traveled to take on cross town rival Glenbrook North. The Titans in the first half repeatedly made costly mistakes which kept the Spartans in the game. Once they stopped making those mistakes, had its way winning 28-14. It was the first meeting between the schools since 2008.

"We shot ourselves in the foot a lot in the first half," Glenbrook South head coach Mike Noll said. "When we didn't, we played a lot better."

The mental mistakes started off offensively almost immediately. After receiving the ball following a Sean Christ interception, Glenbrook South quarterback Zac Zabriskie committed an intentional grounding penalty stalling the drive.

On the next offensive drive, the Titans had a 20-yard Kevin Schroeder touchdown run nullified on a holding penalty. GBS would turn the ball over on downs to end that drive.

The Titans would finally get on the scoreboard with 1:40 remaining in the first half when Zabriskie threw his lone touchdown pass to Zach Jones. GBS added another touchdown shortly after on a run. It appeared the Titans would go into halftime up 14-7.

However, a mistake on defense led to a GBN 41-yard touchdown pass from Petty to Jason Scholl. It was tied at half 14-14.

Glenbrook South played a much cleaner game in the second half. Schroeder added two second half touchdown runs. His second scoring run of the half capped an impressive 14 play, 71-yard drive eating up 6:55 to put the game away.

Neither team played an artistic football game. Glenbrook North committed four turnovers and nine penalties. Glenbrook South had two turnovers and eleven penalties.

"We made too many mistakes," Noll said. "But I'm happy the way we played in the second half."

This was the Titans' fifth straight win over the rival Spartans.

Glenbrook South improved to 2-1 and hosts Maine East on Sept. 16.
