Glenbrook South Titans Sports Scoreboard

Volleyball and football start their postseason runs while soccer's season ended in the sectional semifinals.

Football: Glenbrook South lost a shot at the conference title, .

After finishing the regular season with a record of 7-2, the Titans earned a No. 5 seed in the Class 8A playoffs. They will face a familiar foe in the first round, going up against Central Suburban League South rival New Trier on Friday night in Glenview. The Titans defeated New Trier 21-10 earlier in the season.

Girls Tennis: Glenbrook South had six girls compete in the state championships last weekend. Caroline Ryba won three singles matches before falling in the fourth round to Lyons’ Alex Chatt 6-2, 6-0. Chatt would go on to finish as the tournament runner-up. The doubles team of Charlotte Hoogland and Caley Howland won their first round match, but lost in the second round.

Annemarie Emme, the Titans’ other singles competitor, fell in the first round to Mt. Carmel’s Tyra Buss 6-1, 6-2. Martina Dragoytchev and Allie Sonneborn lost their doubles match 6-2, 6-1in the first round.

The back draw was canceled because of poor weather conditions at the beginning of the tournament.

Girls Cross-Country:  Glenbrook South advanced its varsity squad to the sectional championships with a fifth-place finish at the Class 3A Wilmette Regional last weekend. The Titans had 149 team points, finishing behind champion New Trier (34), Maine South (59), Glenbrook North (72) and Loyola Academy (98).

Senior Danielle DeVito led the Titans with a seventh-place finish, completing the three-mile course in 18 minutes, 53 seconds. Senior Mary Andersen was second on the team, finishing in 26th place at 20:25. Junior Mollie McMahon (31st, 20:33), sophomore Jamie Vear (33rd, 20:35) and junior Melissa Bastanipour (52nd, 21:29) also scored for Glenbrook South.  

Girls Swimming: Junior Olivia Smoliga won two events in Glenbrook South’s 124-62 loss to defending state champion New Trier last week. Smoliga captured first place in the 100-yard freestyle (50.66) seconds and 100 backstroke (56.97).

The 200 medley relay team of Smoliga, Hallie Hengels, Katie Wells and Kimmy Durkin finished in 1:49.08 and came in second. Smoliga, Hengels, Katie Wells and Niki Wells also took second in the 200 free relay (1:38.89).

Individually, Durkin took second in the 500 free (5:17.15) and diver Amanda Browder was also a runner-up (185.30).

Boys Soccer: Glenbrook South (14-7-2) won its first regional championship since 2007 by defeating Niles West 4-3 in penalty kicks last week. The Titans fell to Maine East 5-4 (LINK to game story) in the sectional semifinals at Evanston on Tuesday night. Branden McGarrity scored two goals for Glenbrook South, which tried to rally from deficits of 4-1 and 5-2, but couldn’t find the equalizer in the last 10 minutes.

Volleyball: The Titans easily dispatched of Lane 25-7, 25-12 in the Class 4A Park Ridge Regional semifinals. Glenbrook South advanced to face Maine South on Thursday night.
