Glenbrook South Titans Sports Scoreboard

Seven swimmers advance to the state championships while a number of Titans were honored with all-conference awards.

Girls Swimming: Glenbrook South had seven individuals and three relays qualify for the state championships next weekend while finishing third as a team at the sectional championships.

The Titans were led by Olivia Smoliga, who won the 50-yard freestyle (23.03 seconds) and 100 free (50.22) at the sectional championships. Smoliga broke the pool record at Glenbrook South in the 50 free.

Smoliga’s 50 free wasn’t the only record-breaking performance as the Titans’ 200 medley relay (1:46.06) also broke the pool record and edged New Trier for the sectional title. Smoliga, Hallie Hengels, Kimmy Durkin and Katie Wells were on the relay team.

Durkin qualified in the 200 free (1:54.89) and the 500 free (5:07.79) while Wells will move on to the state championships in the 100 free (53.32). Niki Wells moves on in the 50 free (24.73) and Hengels ges to go back to state in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.93). Freshman Kelly Cordes will compete in the 200 free (1:54.59) and Katie Iida qualified in the 200 individual medley (2:10.84).

Basketball: The girls season kicks off this week and , even in a loaded CSL South. In our preseason school basketball rankings, Glenbrook South is ranked No. 4.

Boys Soccer: The Titans had five players make the CSL South all-conference team. Senior co-cccaptain Branden McGarrity, Mark Ishkhan, Anestis Gavrilopoulos, Drew Maki and Simon Kim received the honor. The Titans finished with a record of 14-8-2 on the year and won a regional championship.

Football: Senior Mike Demos was named co-Lineman of the Year with Maine South’s Pat Barrett.

Eight Titans players made the all-conference team. Demos, OL Max Leonard, RB Kevin Schroeder and OL Scott Spalek were honored for the Titans on the offense while DL Matt Powers, FS Sully Stadler, SS Sean Christ and LB Nick Greco made it defensively.

All eight players are seniors.

Girls Volleyball: Senior Carson Weaver was the lone Titan named to the CSL South All-Conference team. Senior Olivia Nelson received the team sportsmanship award.

Notes: Two Glenbrook South athletes are up for Patch’s Olivia Smoliga and Alli Mack are two of Patch’s five nominees.
