Titans' Sports Roundup: April 12

Boys' water polo was tested early on while girls' softball bounced back from a rough home opener.

Boys Water Polo: Confidence has been the key for boys water polo team early on. Facing a slew of top-25 opponents, the No. 16 Titans have had mixed results so far.

“We came away with a lot of confidence in our close [13-11] loss to [No. 15] New Trier,” coach David Lieberman said. “I was disappointed with our loss to [No. 13] Latin because I felt our guys gave up before the game had started.”

In between, the Titans barely tipped No. 14 Loyola in a hard-fought 9-8 victory. Within matches, Lieberman says the team’s goalkeeping and minimizing defensive miscues have been the main elements in the team’s success.

On April 7, the Titans took down rival Glenbrook North with a 14-10 victory as goalie Tom Meyer had 20 saves.

Still, there’s work to do – the Titans lost their most recent match to No. 1 Fenwick, 20-7, on April 8 – and Lieberman is focused on getting more from some athletes who don’t focus entirely on water polo.

“The mental aspect of the game is difficult for career swimmers to pick up,” Lieberman said. “We have to keep reminding them that they are in the water with six other guys who all have the same goal as them. They need to learn how to rely on each other and communicate better in the water.”

Softball: After  the Titans bounced back to defeat Niles North on the road. Jen Zucker made her first varsity start and struck out 11 batters. Kim Lohre went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to pace the offense.

Glenbrook South easily handled Maine East, 12-1, as Maddy Stark paced the offense by scoring two runs and going 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a triple.

On April 9, the Titans split a double-header, defeating Carmel, 2-0, but losing to Warren, 4-2.

Baseball: Pitcher Luke Harrison (3-0) continued his undefeated season for Glenbrook South by striking out 15 batters in a 4-2 win over St. Patrick on April 9. The Titans (8-2) swept the double-header, winning the second game, 10-2.

The two victories against St. Patrick capped a week in which they four of five games. Their only loss came against Schaumburg, 10-0, on April 6. The Titans also defeated Wheeling and Rolling Meadows earlier in the week.

Boys Basketball: Senior Jeff Ryan is preparing to be a preferred walk-on to the Stanford basketball team next season after recently gaining acceptance into the school.

Track and Field: The Titans had another strong showing at the Schaumburg Saxon Invite on April 9. John Strickland took first place with a meet-record long jump of 22-1. Kyle Kwasniewski placed first in the 100 (11.17) and Gus Shipp jumped 6-0 to take third place in the high jump.
