Titans' Sports Roundup: April 20

Boys Tennis continues its winning ways and girls soccer advanced to the semifinals of the Pepsi Showdown.

Boys Tennis: Glenbrook South knows it will have its hands full playing in the same conference as defending state champion New Trier. But early in the season, Coach Larry Faulkner has been more than satisfied with his team’s play.

“I was extremely pleased; the quality of play of our kids I’m just excited about,” Faulkner said. “They have really stepped up and they’re playing good tennis, which is nice to see early in the year.”

The Titans haven’t backed down from playing big-name opponents. without their No. 2 singles player last week.

While the wins are nice, Faulkner uses the early season to figure out a lineup and let his doubles players develop a chemistry. He hopes that the more partners play together, the easier it will be for them to foster communication and a report with each other.

“When you can play with those teams and even come out on top, you know you’re doing some things right,” Faulkner said. “You want the kids to constantly improve and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Girls Soccer: The Titans (6-4) made a strong run in the Pepsi Showdown soccer tournament spanning several weeks, but lost in the semifinals to Lyons Township on penalty kicks. Two days earlier it was Glenbrook South that prevailed in PKs over Huntley.

Even with the loss to Lyons – which snapped a six-game winning streak -- Glenbrook South’s defense has stood tall of late, shutting out its last six opponents.

Boys Volleyball: Some lineup adjustments following an injury were the key for Glenbrook South (6-4, 1-0 CSL South) in its conference opener. Lucas Rytel had eight kills and six blocks in the Titans’ 25-18, 25-22 victory over Maine South. Brian Brennan chipped in with 27 assists.

The Titans fell to Oak Park-River Forest two days later, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22.

Boys Gymnastics: The Titans took fifth overall at the Dave Donaldson Invitational on Friday despite competing without Adam Klosowiak. Kevin Hamilton turned in a solid performance, finishing sixth in the all-around competition.

The team also edged Highland Park, 142.3 – 142.1, on April 12.

Softball: The Titans posted two shutouts last week. Glenbrook South beat Maine South, 3-0, and followed it up with a 12-0 victory over Niles West in five innings.

Pitcher Jen Zucker picked up the victories in both contests, combining to strike out 23 batters in 12 innings.
