Titans' Sports Roundup: April 26

Softball becomes a contender in the CSL South while girls soccer continues to showcase its dominating defense.

Softball: It was only three weeks ago when Coach Kay Sopocy gathered her team in the dugout after a 14-1 drubbing at the hands of Elk Grove. That was a team they needed to emulate, she said. Elk Grove had shown them where they needed to go.

Since that discussion, Glenbrook South (9-6, 3-1 CSL South) has played like a team on a mission. Jen Zucker has emerged as the ace of the pitching staff and Kim Lohre is settling in as a dangerous cleanup hitter for a team in need of power. Lohre already has clubbed five home runs this season.

“She has a beautiful swing,” Sopocy said of Lohre. “When she gets on it, the ball just pops off of her bat.”

The Titans were undefeated in CSL South play heading into a showdown against New Trier last week. But in nine innings, the Lohre hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning for Glenbrook South’s only runs.

Even though the Titans fell one game back of New Trier for the conference lead, they will see the Trevians once more in May. And Sopocy knows that her team will be ready.

“We knew that we could play with them tonight,” Sopocy said. “We made a couple miscues that last inning. We didn’t get our bat on it like we had hoped, but it was a great softball game.”

Girls Soccer: The Titans last weekend and continued to showcase a staunch defense.

Boys Track: Glenbrook South took second place as a team in the Lake Forest Invite last weekend. The Titans (120 points) were only seven points shy of champion Zion-Benton (127 points), but beat CSL South rival New Trier (72 points).

Kyle Kwasniewski won two events for Glenbrook South, taking first in the 100 (11.0) and pole vault (13-00). John Strickland won the long jump with a mark of 22-4.5 and Gus Shipp came home with a first-place finish in the 110 hurdles (15.9). Marsean Hood won the 300 Hurdles with a time of 42.1.

Boys Water Polo: Glenbrook South finished in third place at its own Titan Invitational this weekend. GBS (17-5-2) tied games against Palatine and Naperville North on Saturday, both of which are ranked in the Top 20.

Baseball: The Titans continued to cruise along in the early spring with two more lopsided victories last week. Glenbrook South beat Evanston, 11-1, in six innings on April 21 and followed it up with a 15-3 victory against Prospect in six innings, two days later.

Glenbrook South (12-3, 3-0 CSL South) got solid pitching performances from Josiah Carlson and Luke Harrison while Zach Jones went 5-for-5 at the plate against Evanston.
