Titans' Sports Roundup: Cross Country Team Off and Running

Girls volleyball went 3-2 in its last tournament and one girls tennis player has some high expectations for the season.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: As cross country season begins, the cooler summer weather isn’t the only thing coach Kurt Hasenstein is excited about.

The emergence of senior Sam Stanek along with a number of talented sophomores has Hasenstein thinking the Titans could be a player in the CSL South.

“It’s going to be interesting with our younger kids. They are very talented,” Hassenstein said. “I’d like to think that by the end of the year we’d be in the top half of our conference.”

The Titans also return senior leader Brad Berg, who advanced to the sectional meet as an individual last year, and Hasenstein thinks Berg and Stanek will be able to do some damage by working together up front.

In the Titans’ first dual meet of the season against Glenbrook North, Stanek and Berg were paired together for a relay-style four-mile run and won the overall title with a time of just more than 20 minutes.

“Sam really came into his own last year,” Hasenstein said. “He put a lot of miles in this summer and looks awfully good in practice.”

The two are joined on the varsity level by Peter Westerfield, Dan Weathers and Jack Meyers while sophomores David O’Gara and Alex Jackman will eventually get the call up to varsity. O’Gara won the individual sophomore title at the Crystal Lake South Invitational last weekend, finishing the 2.2 mile course in 11:51.

“Both these runners will make a big difference for us when they get moved up to varsity in a few weeks,” Hasenstein said.

While Hasenstein thinks that New Trier and Maine South are head-and-shoulders above the rest of the conference, his Titan squad should have a shot at making some noise in the postseason.

“Our goal is to advance out of regionals to the sectional meet and see where we end up,” Hasenstein said. “It might be a tough route, but we’ll see what we can do as a team and if not as a team, then certainly get Brad and Sam to have a shot individually at making it to state.”

GIRLS TENNIS: Sophomore was named by the Chicago Sun-Times as one of the top singles players to watch in the upcoming season.

BOYS SOCCER: Brandon McGarrity scored two goals while Luis Bautista had a goal and an assist to help Glenbrook South (2-2-2) to a 4-1 victory over Wheeling on August 31. McGarrity has six goals on the season.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Danielle DeVito finished eighth in the Fenton “Early Bird” Invitational and was Glenbrook South’s top runner. The Titans took eighth out of 16 teams in the squad’s first big meet of the season on September 3.

VOLLEYBALL: Glenbrook South went 3-2 to finish in sixth place at the New Trier Tournament last weekend. The Titans defeated Oak Park-River Forest and Highland Park, but lost to Loyola Academy in a tough three-game match in pool play.

The Titans were then placed in the second-place pod and defeated Regina before losing to Warren in the fifth-place game.
