Titans' Sports Roundup: Depth Propels Girls Swimming to Tournament Title

Girls Swimming: Behind eight first-place finishes, Glenbrook South won the Spartan Sprint Classic on Sept. 17.

and Hallie Hengels each won two events. Smoliga took first place in the 50 back (26.89 seconds) and 100 free (53.60), while Hengels won the title in the 50 breast (31.89) and 100 breast (1:07.85).

Other individual first-place finishers were Katie Wells (100 back, 1:00.03), Lizzie Baetz (25 breast, 15.12) and Diana Capota (25 back, 14.03). Smoliga, Hengels, Kimmy Durkin and Wells won the 200-medley relay (1:50.60)

Boys Soccer: split a pair of CSL South matches last week, beating Niles West 1-0 and falling to Evanston 4-2. Brandon McGarrity had the Titans’ only goal against the Wolves, scoring on a penalty kick to give Glenbrook South a win in its CSL South opener.

The Titans will face Evanston in a key CSL South matchup on Sept. 23.

Girls Volleyball: The Titans participated in one of the most competitive volleyball tournaments of the season at Wheaton Warrenville South. Placed into Pool B against undefeated Marist and host Wheaton Warrenville South, Glenbrook South lost its first two matches and was relegated to the Bronze Bracket.

The Titans lost another tough match to Downers Grove North 25-22, 25-22, but rebounded to beat Plainfield North in the consolation semifinals 13-25, 25-20, 25-20. Glenbrook South fell to Oak Park 18-25, 27-25, 25-23, taking 22nd place in the tournament.

In conference play, Glenbrook South lost to Evanston 29-27, 25-10, but defeated Maine South in two close games 26-24, 25-23.

Boys Golf: Glenbrook South was edged by Evanston 156-157 last week as the Titans’ Luke McCanna earned medalist honors with a 37 on nine holes.

Quinn Prchal shot 73 to take second at the Match Medal Invitational on Saturday at Naperbrook.

Girls Tennis: Glenbrook South took second place as a team at the Loyola Invitational on Sept. 17. The Titans beat Hinsdale South 3-2 in the quarterfinals and garnered a 4-1 win over Edwardsville in the semifinals. But in the finals, Glenbrook South met defending state runner-up Hinsdale Central and was swept 5-0.

Girls Golf: The Titans finished third in the nine-team Giant Invitational at Sunset Valley Golf Course on Saturday. Tammy Song (96), Dambi Kim (97), Hye In Lee (97) and Madison Gately (100) combined for a 390. Stevenson won the overall title with a 331, 56 shots clear of second-place Deerfield (387).

Girls Cross-Country: Danielle DeVito finished second at the Blue Devil Invitational on Saturday, pacing Glenbrook South (304 points) to a 10th-place finish as a team. DeVito finished the three-mile course in 17 minutes and 58 seconds, only 12 seconds behind Fremd’s Kelly Breen. Fremd won the team title with 69 points.
