VIDEO: Smoliga Wins Two State Titles, Leads GBS to Fifth Place Finish

Olivia Smoliga now has . She now owns three Illinois state records in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 backstroke. And she's still got another year to add to those totals.

For the second straight year, the junior captured two state titles at the Saturday at New Trier High School. She successfully defended her state title in the 50 free and set a new state record (22.55). Smoliga chose not to swim the 100 backstroke, which she set the state record in last year (53.43), and instead took on the 100 free. It worked out well, as Smoliga set a new state record in that event as well (48.88 prelims).

Smoliga also partnered with Hallie Hengels, Kimmy Durkin, and Katie Wells as part of the GBS 200 medley relay team that finished in third (143.94). Smoliga, Niki Wells, Anna Veselovsky and Katie Wells also captured second place (1:34.80) in the 200 free relay.

Other individual scorers for the Spartans included Senior Hallie Hengels, who placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.54), and freshman Katie Wells finished 10th in the 100 free (52.40).

finished fifth in the team standings, posting the highest point total in team history at a state meet (97).

"We definitley had some lofty goals and I knew that we were capable of some pretty awesome things," Glenbrook South Head Coach Kelly Timson said. "It was a fast meet, but I told the girls we can only conrtol what we do, not what the other teams do.  But I would say they exceded my expectations."
