VIDEO: Titans Shut Out New Trier, Advance to Second Round

With a dominating running game and a shut-down defense, Glenbrook South trampled New Trier and bounced the Trevians 27-0 in the first round of the playoffs.

Breaking it Down: bounced back in a big way after its loss to Maine South in the regular season finale.

Glenbrook South’s offense struggled early on, the Titans’ running attack of Kevin Schroeder, Alex Leet and Billy Pappas was dominating after the first quarter. Schroeder got the bulk of the carries and scored two touchdowns in the second quarter.

With New Trier’s focus on the running game, QB Mac Zabriskie picked the Trevian secondary apart on play-action. Most of his passes went for big gains and the senior signal-caller was great in the two-minute drill to end the first half.

On defense, Glenbrook South stuffed New Trier’s running game, a big difference from their regular-season meeting when the Trevians’ Danny Olaniyan ran for more than 100 yards. After falling behind big and without a consistent running attack, New Trier relied exclusively on Jack Nykaza’s arm and scrambling ability. Glenbrook South put the game away by forcing three New Trier turnovers in the second half.

The Titans won a playoff game for the third straight season and will be looking to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.

Patch’s MVP: Kevin Schroeder, Glenbrook South. Schroeder may be the toughest runner in the North Shore. He routinely picked up four or five yards after contact and continued to be the Titans’ workhorse. Schroeder got better as the game went on as his physical style of running wore down New Trier’s defense.

Glenbrook South Stat Pack: Zabriskie finished the night 6-for-9 passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Schroeder led the Titans with 111 rushing yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. Ose Ilenikhena had three catches for 58 yards and a touchdown.

New Trier Stat Pack: Nykaza was 15-for-36 passing for 138 yards with an interception. He also had 14 carries for 58 yards rushing. Michael Thomas had seven carries for 26 yards rushing.

Quotable I: “It just seemed like tonight we made some positive things happen and then something bad would happen either the next play or a couple plays later,” New Trier coach Dan Starkey said.

Quotable II: “This is what we needed. Maine South was a really tough loss…but we came back in this game, win, and showed everybody that we mean business,” Glenbrook South RB Alex Leet said.

Team Records: Glenbrook South is now 8-2 on the year while New Trier finishes the season at 6-4.

What’s Next: Glenbrook South moves on to the second round where it will face Lyons on the road. New Trier’s season is finished.
