District 31 Seeks 6.3% Property Tax Hike

Officials at West Northfield School District 31 are seeking a 6.3 percent increase to the property tax levy this year, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The district expects to net about $14.44 million due to the proposed levy increase, the Tribune reports.

District 31 passed a referendum to increase property taxes by $1.8 million in March 2012. Officials said the tax hike was necessary to prevent the district from going bankrupt, given mounting costs for students needing state-mandated English language classes, $1.35 million in necessary building repairs and huge property tax appeals from major taxpayer Allstate.
