Wilmette native Elissa Froman died at age 29 of Hodgkin's lymphoma. Friends and coworkers remember her dedication to social justice and her unusual ability to build community in the personal and political spheres.
Although she didn’t have a rabbinical degree, friends and co-workers who knew Elissa Froman say that her precocious ability to build community and her dedication to social justice made her, in many ways, already a rabbi. Froman, who grew up in Wilmette, died of lymphoma at age 29 on Friday, March 22. She spent her short career advocating for social change as a legislative associate with the National Council of Jewish Women and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, D.C. As her next move, she had hoped to bring her commitment to social justice to the pulpit. Glenview's Richard Morrow died on Jan. 21 at age 86 in Glenview, where he lived for much of his life.
Richard Morrow, 86, of Glenview, the former CEO of Amoco, the one-time international gas and oil company, died on Jan. 21, Crain's Chicago Business reports. In a 1987 profile on Morrow, Fortune called him "dour and meticulous," described him as a man of "personal caution and conservatism" and that he used to hunt, fish and play gin rummy. Morrow was a trustee at the University of Chicago and Rush Medical Center, according to Crain's, and married to Janet Malone, a member of the Chicago Ethics Board, according to Fortune. The Internet pioneer passed away this weekend in an apparent suicide. He was a student at North Shore Country Day School and grew up in Highland Park. His funeral is Tuesday morning.
Teachers and administrators at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka remember former student Aaron Swartz as extremely intelligent and curious. Swartz, an Internet activist, co-creator of social news website Reddit and founder of Demand Progress, was found dead in an apparent suicide on Friday in his apartment in Brooklyn. He was 26. Aaron Swartz, a Highland Park native and activist for free content on the Internet, was found dead Friday in his Brooklyn apartment in an apparent suicide, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He was 26. Swartz helped create the RSS feed, which allows people to subscribe to information online, when he was just 14, according to an article in the New York Times.
