Voice your opinion Dec. 3. One board member voted no, saying it's not needed; others said the district should put aside money in preparation for big expenditures coming due--especially teacher pensions.
The district unveiled a 10-year plan with a $62 million price tag; most of it is roof work, new lighting, tuckpointing, mechanical work to keep the Maine East, South and West buildings going. Some are 80 years old.
Changes are most pronounced at Maine East, but all three high schools--including Maine West and South--follow the trend. Overall enrollment is down slightly.

Parents in D-63 recently received letters saying 5 of 7 schools are not making 'adequate yearly progress' under the NCLB law. But educators say the schools are performing well--it's the law that's flawed.
Plan projects more in property taxes because of early tax bills
In its proposed budget, taxpayers will pay more, though it also benefits from casino revenue. It also will spend less, due to two programs being cut. District residents can voice their opinions.
They signed a teachers contract because they had common goals–to avoid the financial chaos that led to laying off 137 employees two years ago.
Ninth-graders at Maine East, South were tested when they arrived in September, and have higher scores than the district's sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Maine East and Maine West students will need a $100 calculator for math, but, sensitive to the rough time many families are having, the board says it will keep fees the same for next year.
