The Glenview Prairie Club for golf and paddle tennis will have its grand opening May 4, featuring a paddle tennis demonstration and a ribbon cutting.
The Glenview Park District is celebrating the grand opening of its new Prairie Club with a paddle tennis demonstration an hour before the ribbon cutting. On Saturday, May 4, the Prairie Club at 2800 West Lake St. will begin its grand opening at 10:00 a.m. with a professional paddle demonstration, followed by a ribbon cutting at 11:00 a.m., then two hours of paddle tennis playing and tours of the new clubhouse and courts. The club's 9 hole golf course will also be open from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at its usual weekend rate. Prairie Club memberships are now available online at resident and non-resident rates. Organizers of Breathe Deep North Shore have a goal of raising $100,000 for lung cancer research. Last year's event raised $140,000.
There's still time to register to participate in Breathe Deep North Shore, a 5K fun run, 1-mile walk and balloon launch to raise crucial funds for the LUNGevity Foundation for lung cancer research. The event will be held 9:30-11:30 Sunday, April 28 at Deerfield High School. Registration fees are $10-$25, and is free for lung cancer survivors. Ballroom dance students will compete for individual and studio titles in April.
Dancers from Northbrook, Glenview and other surrounding suburbs will put their skills to the test this month at a national dance competition. Nine students at Fred Astaire Dance Studio will travel to Las Vegas in mid-April to compete in the Cross Country Dance Championship. They will be judged in American Rhythm (cha cha, rumba, swing, mambo and bolero) and American Smooth (waltz, tango, foxtrot, Viennese waltz) competitions. The dancers are not professionals; some took ballet when they were young, but “most of them haven’t had very much dance experience” before enrolling in the Buffalo Grove studio, manager Elle Sprague said. “A lot of them have been taking lessons for two to six years,” Sprague said. Maddy Stark, a sophomore at Kenyon College in Ohio, was named pitcher of the week by th eNorth Coast Athletic Conference for her impressive performance during the first six games of her softball team's season.
Maddy Stark, a Glenbrook South alumna and sophomore softball player at Kenyon Collage in Gambier, Ohio, was recently picked as pitcher of the week in the North Coast Athletic Conference for her impressive performance during the first six games of the season, including two shutouts, according to the college's website. By the time she was nominated for pitcher of the week, Stark struck out 28 batters in 39.2 innings pitched, according to the school's site. The home features a three-car garage, seven fireplaces, six full baths, a wood-paneled library and a kitchen with marble counters, Chicago Tribune reported. “I’m a suburbanite now…In L.A. you have to be so careful about what you say and who you trust. As the facility renovates to include paddle tennis courts, the Glenview Park Board approved to change the destination's name.
The Glenview Park Board has agreed to rename the National 9 Golf Club to Glenview Prairie Club to reflect the facility's upcoming paddle tennis courts that are currently under construction, according to a park district press release. “As we expand our customer base to include both golf and platform tennis enthusiasts, it made sense to rename National 9 Golf Club," Cheryl Doem, Superintendent of Special Facilities at Glenview Park District, said in the release. "We felt that Glenview Prairie Club reached both audiences in the community and is a solid foundation for us to build on." Brian Hansen got first place in the 1,000-meter race in Germany.
Glenview's Brian Hansen, 22, won his first speedskating World Cup during a 1,000-meter race in Erfurt, Germany on Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reports. "It was a little bit of a surprise to win the 1,000," Hansen told the Chicago Tribune. Hansen finished the race in 1 minute, 9.79 seconds, beating Stefan Groothuis from the Netherlands by five- hundredths of a second, according to USA Today.
