It's a leading cause of deaths. But unlike many other diseases, you can actually do something to prevent colon cancer. By Slawomir Marecik, M.D., Colorectal Surgery, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital

True or False: - Colon cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. - There is really nothing you can do to prevent constipation. - Changes to your diet can improve your colon health and prevent disease of the colon. - A colonoscopy is only necessary if you have a family member with colon cancer. Only one of these statements is true. If you aren’t sure which one it is, you may not have all of the information you need for optimal colon health. As a colorectal surgeon, I find that this is the case with many of my patients. Accurate, timely information is one key to maintaining a healthy colon and preventing serious disease. Take for example that colon cancer is actually the second leading cause of cancer…

Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital NICU: 40 Years of Phenomenal Care Right in Your Backyard As clinical manager of Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospitals NICU, right here in Park Ridge, part of my job is raising awareness about who we are and the great work we do here. For starters, we are the third largest neonatal intensive care unit (or NICU) in Illinois. We are a Level 3 perinatal trauma center, meaning we are able to provide the highest level of care to the most at-risk premature and critically ill newborns. Because of that status, we regularly transport babies from community hospitals in the Chicagoland area and beyond to our NICU, to ensure they receive the life-saving care they need. Front and center …

Watching your toddler navigate through the complexities of developing their sense of speech is pretty exciting. Their first words are, of course, monumental, but there is something really special when your child begins to put words together in a sentence. This begins to happen during the toddler years, between the ages of two and three. It is also a time when you may notice your child developing a speech pattern that can resemble stuttering, called “developmental stuttering”. For most children, it is nothing to be concerned about. Natural Part of Speech Development Developmental stuttering is a normal phase of speech development that occurs when a child’s speech is rapidly developing. So rapidly, in fact, that the child’s cognitive …

For many years, total knee replacement surgery has been the usual treatment for people suffering from severe osteoarthritis of the knee. After non-invasive approaches such as OTC pain medications, weight loss, physical therapy and injections have been exhausted; a surgeon’s next recommendation typically has been to replace the knee. Total knee replacement is a routine surgery with a solid history of good outcomes. After a recuperation period, patients can expect to return to their daily activities and a life with little or no knee pain. Surgical technique and implant technology has advanced substantially over the years as well, resulting in longer implant lifespans. It is not uncommon for implants to last 20 years, which means many …

Officially, June was National Scoliosis Awareness Month, as declared by the United States Congress and supported by the Scoliosis Research Society. Such a declaration is a great way to bring attention to a condition that affects thousands of people in the United States and around the world. But, because of its prevalence and because of how important early diagnosis and intervention are, I think every month should be scoliosis awareness month. What is Scoliosis? In short, scoliosis refers to an atypical side-to-side curvature of the spine. The typical human spine does have a natural curvature. The natural curve of the spine rounds our shoulders and curves our lower backs slightly inward. By contrast, the spines of people with …

For many people, the idea of using a robot to perform surgery is something out of a science fiction movie. But, the technology has actually been around for some time now. It is a minimally invasive technique that helps surgeons perform long, complicated operations with great accuracy and without getting tired. The robot also gives us access to areas of the body too narrow for our hands to reach, a feature that is especially helpful with obese patients. The procedure involves inserting two robotic arms and a camera into the body through tiny incisions. The surgeon sits at a console and controls the robot’s arms remotely. Each year, we perform almost 350 robotic surgeries and the results are amazing—less risk, less pain, and shorter recovery…

For many women, a mammogram is one of those “just in case” rituals that they must undergo regularly, without much excitement other than some brief discomfort. But for women who are at a greater risk for breast cancer and those who have dense breasts, it can be an unnerving experience—one that is compounded when additional imaging is needed. Nearly 10percent of women who come into the Caldwell Breast Center for a mammogram receive a “callback” for a second scan, often due to a suspicious finding. The anxiety those women endure while waiting for their results is palpable. Luckily, that number should decrease, thanks to 3D mammography. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital’s Caldwell Breast Center is first in the Midwest to offer 3D mammography…

At a Hawaiian-themed event, the hospital thanked its patients and commended them for their positive attitudes and hard work toward fighting cancer.
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital ushered in patients past and present with Hawaiian flower leis and gratitude Sunday afternoon at its annual cancer survivors celebration. Hospital staff and volunteers greeted survivors at the event, which was held to thank patients and to congratulate them on their successful battles against the disease. Several doctors got into the spirit of the event and danced in grass skirts and coconut tops with the instruction of a band of professional hula dancers. Dr. Heidi Memmel, co-chair of the Caldwell Breast Center at Advocate Lutheran, was one of the doctors who came to celebrate. “Today is always a fun event, especially for me,” said Memmel. “I get to see my breast cancer patients outside of the office. It…

A mom and a nurse formed the group at Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital.
When Melanie Toth was 20 weeks pregnant, she was shocked to received news her child had congenital heart disease. Toth and her husband, who live on Chicago's Northwest Side near Niles, had no idea what the rare condition, tetralogy of fallot, caused by the combination of four heart defects, would mean for the kind of life their family would be living. The many types of congenital heart disease – heart problems present at birth – all have the same devastating effects on parents. It’s an unexpected diagnosis of often little understood conditions that can mean uncertain futures. Toth’s doctor directed them to Bettina Cuneo, M.D., a maternal fetal medicine specialist at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital, who helped the Toths to …

This is a great honor. There are several awards out there but to be able to boast about being top 100 in 5 year long term recovery says something about the aftercare and the well being of the patients. You can't teach that. That is something that is culturally based - Andrew - JRSmedical   more ›
