For about 15 years, students have had access to a weekend program that drives them home on late, weekend nights. The program might help explain why there are so few car accidents involving North Shore teens on weekends.
Students at New Trier Township High School who go out on weekends to party with friends, maybe even drink, have Safe-Rides to get them home safely and discreetly late at night. The Safe-Rides program is managed by Boy Scouts of America Northeast Illinois Council, and has been run entirely by student volunteers for about 15 years. According to one adult supervisor, who asked to keep his name out of print because, as he put it, "the kids do all the work, I can't take any credit," the Safe-Rides program has prevented car accidents with teen driviers. Recently released documents reveal Boy Scout leaders in Patch towns who were expelled from the organization and placed on list, which includes leaders from Glenview, Evanston, Park Ridge and Arlington Heights.
The Boys Scouts of America's method for handling allegations of child abuse by local troop leaders was expelling the accused and putting the person’s name on an ineligible to volunteer list, or what has become known as a "perversion list." The list was kept secret and many of the allegations remained confidential, often not reported to police agencies. Last week, a Portland law firm posted 14,500 of files outlining names and cases of abuse involving the Scouts, according to Huffington Post. Within hours, the firm's website crashed, Huffington Post reported. The list includes troop leaders from around the country, including the Chicago area. Last Thursday's Flag Day celebration in Glenview's Jackman Park included a dignified tribune to Old Glory by veterans, Scouts and the Knights of Columbus.
Veterans from Glenview American Legion Post 166, scouts including Boy Scout Troop 175 from St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles and a Knights of Columbus unit gathered Thursday in Glenview's Jackman Park for a Flag Day ceremony. After a dignified procession and a speech hailing Old Glory, Scouts lowered the flag from a flagpole and marched to an official, who placed it in burning flames according to flag etiquette. Veterans then offered a shotgun salute. See it all in the photo and video gallery.
