Area nonprofits like Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics Illinois are among those trying to encourage people to pause in their shopping and find a way to help others.
Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. For many people, the holiday shopping marathon began on Thanksgiving day, with some national chains opening their doors just hours after the traditional turkey dinner. Then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, which has morphed into Cyber Week. Now, there's a new campaign asking you to open your wallet: Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, is designed "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." Many…

Looking for an opportunity to feel philanthropic? You've got choices.
Last week we were trapped in our own driveways. It was the North Shore Half Marathon, and since the signs were only posted at every corner of every street for weeks and weeks prior to the event, and since this has been an annual event for only 33 years, naturally, it took us by surprise. Just kidding. This year, we were prepped and ready. We moved our cars at dawn so that we could actually use them and get to our own charity fun run in Elk Grove Village. Unlike the half marathon, our Foundation Fighting Blindness event covered a mere 5 kilometers. But it was enough. ‘Tis the season for charity events. A glance at any community calendar features a veritable cornucopia of summer fun runs, half jogs, slow walks, wife carries, stair climbs, …

At Glenview Patch , we're all about helping local businesses and charities serve our community. So we've come up with a way to help Breathe Deep Deerfield charity while supporting local businesses at the same time. We’re calling it our "Patch Click and Claim for Charity" program. First you need to know about our business directory, which we try to keep updated with a listing for every business and organization in town. Listings are free, and if, as a business, you “claim” yours, there are all sorts of great perks. You can upload photos to the listing, respond directly to reader reviews and get your customers to “follow” your listing, which means they’ll get an email anytime you add an event or announcement to the site. (There’s info on …

Glenview firefighters and police play charity hockey game at Allstate Arena to benefit local organization.
Several teams of local firefighters and police hit the ice at Allstate Arena Sunday morning before an afternoon Wolves game to benefit local charities. The Wolves provide the venue, but the teams get to decide which charity receives the donations. Sunday, the Glenview team played for Camp I Am Me, a camp for children who have suffered severe burn injuries run by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance. The Glenview team formed nine months ago and regularly plays on Tuesdays against other local fire and police teams. Several of the guys had played in the event before with other teams, which was how they knew about and got involved in playing the event this year. This week's Patch Portraits also feature Oak Park's homeless advocate and Deerfield's new chef.
This week's Patch Portraits feature a homeless advocate from Oak Park who has more than 1,600 followers on Twitter and a Deerfield chef cooking up community as he returns to his hometown. When Blake Helton had to think of an Eagle Scout project, his first idea was to run. Not away from the responsibility but for a cause. On July 23, Blake will host a 5k fun run and walk at Niles West High School to benefit Share Your Soles, a charity that sends used shoes overseas to people who have none. “I had the idea to do a 5k because I run myself. I’m a track athlete and cross county runner. I figured why not put my two passions together, scouting and running,” said Helton. Helton had the idea to look for an organization that collects shoes because…

Bejeweled costumes, spirited music and shaking hips helped raise $1000 for Glenview charity Mission Green Light April 17.
An afternoon of belly dancing and Bollywood music marked Mission Green Light's "Let's Beat Cancer by Dancing" event at Niles restaurant Mango last weekend. Nearly 80 people helped the organization raise $1000, the charity’s founder Rafi Munim told Patch. The Glenview-based charity assists women in getting free breast cancer screenings and cancer-related treatments when needed. Its members also promote prevention, particularly in terms of staying in shape and remaining active, explained Sonya Blacker, CEO of health and fitness for Mission Green Light. Staying healthy can help to decrease the risk of cancer in women by 20 percent, Munim added. “We raise money for those who might not be able to afford screenings, or are uninsured,” Blacker …
