Cook County Courts Electronics Ban Starts Jan. 14

Cell phones won’t be allowed in courts throughout the county.

  Cell phones, laptops and tablets won’t be allowed in Cook County courthouses starting Monday per an order by the county’s chief judge who wants to make courthouses safer and protect people testifying in court. Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans’s order takes effect Monday, but there will be a three-month grace period. The Circuit Court of Cook County and the Cook County Sheriff’s Department will remind people entering a courthouse that communication devices are prohibited, Evans said in a statement released Friday. “It will be strongly suggested devices remain in the car,” he said. Court Update: Alleged Carjacker Switches Lawyers, Remains in Jail

A Glenview woman charged with kidnapping and carjacking changed lawyers Aug. 16 in the Skokie branch of Cook County Circuit Court but remains in Cook County Jail unable to post the $30,000 cash portion of her $300,000 bond.  Crystal Perez, 19, was originally arrested April 13 for the March 30 kidnapping and carjacking of a 22-year-old Glenview man at knifepoint after luring him to her home with the promise of sex. The incident left the second offender, Christopher J. Walsh, 20, dead after a brief police chase and subsequent crash. Perez had been represented by attorney Joe Romano who she replaced with a new lawyer, William Fahy, at last week's status hearing, according to Cook County State’s Attorney spokesperson Andy Conklin. Court Update: Bomb Threat Case Nears Resolution

Former student accused of making bomb threats against GBS and GBN High Schools may seek judicial intervention.

Resolution in the case of Ryan Ricco, the former District 225 student accused of making bomb threats against Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools, is getting closer, according to statements made Monday in the Skokie branch of Cook County Criminal Court. The 18-year-old Northbrook resident is charged with two separate felony counts of making false terrorist threats, carrying a possible prison term of four to 15 years, according to Cook County State’s Attorney Spokesperson Andy Conklin. He is also charged with felony disorderly conduct--which carries a possible two- to five-year prison sentence--and a misdemeanor claim of illegal possession of fireworks. “I’m seeking a 402 conference,” Ricco attorney Steven Weinberg said to Judge…

State's Attorney: Promise of Sex Lured Carjacking Victim

Bond remains at $300,000 for Crystal Perez following a crime spree that left one dead.

According to new details released in court yesterday, the March 30th kidnapping and carjacking of a 22-year-old man in Glenview allegedly started with promises of sex from an ex-girlfriend. Crystal Perez, 19, of Glenview, and a second assailant, Christopher Walsh, 20, of Chicago, allegedly lured the victim to Perez’s home, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Mary Morris said in the Skokie branch of Cook County Court yesterday. Morris told the court how the victim was abducted at knife point, forced into the back seat of his car and taken for a drive. According to police reports, the victim was dropped off in Evanston around 1:30 a.m. and called police to tell authorities of his circumstances. When pursued by officers, Perez and Walsh …

Judge Orders Pre-Trial Investigation in Sexual Abuse, Herpes Case

Glenview man accused of giving teenager herpes pleaded not guilty at his last court appearance, March 9.

A pre-trial investigation in the case of Allen Giron, a Glenview man charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, was ordered by Judge Timothy Chambers today in the Skokie Branch of Cook County Circuit Court. Giron pleaded not guilty to the charges at his last court appearance, March 9. The investigation could lead to a resolution of the case according to Giron’s attrorney Steven Goldman.  If convicted however, Giron could face up to seven years in prison for two alleged sexual encounters with a 13-year-old Des Plaines girl that left her with herpes, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. UPDATE: Former SWANCC Exec Pleads Not Guilty to Theft of $900K, Childhood Friend Speaks to Patch

Christopher Brooke Beal pleaded not guilty today in the Skokie branch of Cook County Circuit Court to a six-count felony indictment related to charges of stealing more than $900,000. His bond was also modified to remove electronic home monitoring.  The Cook County Grand Jury recently indicted Beal, the former executive director of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) on two charges of theft of government property, official misconduct and forgery. These Class X felonies carry a prison sentence of six to 30 years.  Beal was charged March 10 with stealing more than $900,000 in funds from SWANCC after a five-month joint investigation involving the Glenview Police Department and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Public …

UPDATE: Former SWANCC Exec Indicted for Theft of $900K

If convicted, the nonprofit's former executive director could face 30 years in prison.

An indictment on two counts of theft of government property, forgery and misconduct was announced today in the Skokie Branch of Cook County Circuit Court against Christopher Brooke Beal, 47, the former executive director of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC).  Beal is charged with a Class X felony, assigned to any theft of more than $100,000 in government property, said Lisa Gordon, a spokesperson with the Cook County State’s Attorney's office. If convicted, he could receive a sentence of six to 30 years in prison. The attorney for the Glenview police, fire and public safety dispatcher accused of running naked through his Chicago apartment building last year asked a judge today to convene a settlement conference for his client. Steven Delatorre was originally arrested on two counts of public indecency while at work at the Glenview Police Station Feb. 1. Delatorre was booked on five additional counts Feb. 16 immediately after appearing in court to answer the first two. He now faces seven misdemeanor counts of public indecency.  Delatorre’s attorney, Joe Roddy, asked Judge Anthony John Calabrese to convene a settlement conference under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 402. “The judge acts as a mediator [under Rule 402] and tells both sides how he sees the …

The case of Steven Delatorre, the Glenview police, fire and public safety dispatcher allegedly caught on camera running naked through his Chicago condominium building, moved closer to resolution at a status hearing March 18 in the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago. New Bomb Threat Details: Classmates, Court Records Paint Picture of Troubled Glenbrook Student

While Ryan Ricco faces a felony charge for his alleged Dec. 8 threat, students and parents mostly agree that the incident hasn't shaken their sense of security.

It started with Facebook, fireworks, and a girl. Now, District 225 high school student Ryan Ricco, 18, faces a Dec. 27 court date and a felony charge for threatening to blow up two local high schools.  According to court documents, Ricco initiated unwanted contact with a female Glenbrook South student beginning June 29. Despite repeated warnings not to contact her or her sibling, Ricco continued to approach the girl via Facebook and over the phone on Sept. 26, Oct. 12 and Oct. 29.  Although she did not respond to any of Ricco's contacts, he communicated with her through Facebook again on Dec. 8, and threatened to bomb the Glenbrook Schools, according to court documents and Glenview Police Department reports.  Ricco told the girl that he …
