Opinions Collide at Gun Control Forum

Panel hosted by New Trier Democrats heavily attended by pro-gun advocates.

The New Trier Democrats' panel on gun control turned raucous Sunday, with some members of the audience yelling and interrupting during the speakers. The panel, which was held at the Glenview Police Station auditorium, was entitled “Guns and Public Safety: Where We Stand After Sandy Hook,” and aimed to discuss issues related to guns, including legislation, victims, conceal and carry laws and the history behind the nation's current laws. The crowd, which was so big that many attendees were turned away at the door, was largely made up of National Rifle Association (NRA) members and other pro-gun advocates from around the state. Many were there because of an Illinois State Rifle Association email sent out asking members to come, and some were…

Are We 'On' or 'In' the North Shore?

One letter has sparked a heated debate between two Patch editors, and we need our readers to settle this once and for all.

Joanna Schneider, editor of Glenview Patch, recently noticed that Stan Golovchuk, editor of Northbrook Patch, was writing "in the North Shore" when referring to local news. She pointed this out to him and advised he use "on" instead. She insists this the appropriate attribution, and a few of their colleagues seem to agree.  Golovchuk did not appreciate the advice, not one bit. A fight broke out — words were said, pans were thrown and still no clear winner emerged from the debate.  Both sides made some strong points.  "Towns such as Northbrook and Glenview, which consider themselves part of the North Shore, are not along the lake," Golovchuk said. "Therefore, they wouldn't be on the Shore, they're in it. It being a region. C'mon people."  …

I thought bring on"the shore" means a location near to a body of water. Maybe some people think that it is irrelevant how many miles the location is from the body of water. Depending on your definition, the location of the former Cabrini-Green housing projects could be considered the Gold Coast. (Sure, would Anyone else like top stretch the facts?) Mr. Clean Car Wash Not Heading to Glenview Anytime Soon

After months of controversy, Mr. Clean Car Wash officials withdrew their plan commission application to build a location at 2100 Waukegan Rd.

With very little fanfare, the battle for the construction of a Mr. Clean Car Wash at 2100 Waukegan Road is over. The village plan commission accepted a letter from the petitioner withdrawing the application at its regular meeting Tuesday, April 12, ending a series of debates that began in October. "It was withdrawn for whatever reason," said plan commission Chairman Steven Bucklin. "I personally don't know the reasons why." Bucklin added that it's possible the applicant, Mr. Clean Car Wash CEO Bruce Arnett, noted the various issues that came up or perhaps the officials found another place to build. Commissioners had concerns about potential traffic pile-ups on Waukegan Road, noise and likely water runoff's harmful effects to Valley Lo Lake…
