Maine West Parent ‘Sickened’ by Tolerance of Bullying

Four families have filed a lawsuit against D-207 administrators, faculty, coaches and staff over hazing, bullying, physical and sexual assault allegations. Three plaintiffs were added to the suit on Wednesday.

Shielded by a cap and sunglasses to conceal her identity, the mother of a former Maine West student spoke to reporters with her attorney, Antonio Romanucci, about why she joined the hazing and bullying lawsuit at the law firm’s Chicago office on Wednesday. The woman said she was “sickened” when she heard about the report of a Maine West High School student being hazed and bullied recently. Some of the same coaches were employed at the Des Plaines high school, including varsity soccer coach Michael Divincenzo, she said, as were when her son was the target of similar assaults in 2008. Her son was transferred to Maine East High School in Niles, and continued to suffer as a result of being repeatedly targeted by other student athletes, she …

I agree with most of what you said ( except your logic on people posting answers being close to the attackers and commentors not being bright unless you only meant B Garret & RJ Mayer)then I agree with all of what you said, but want to set the record straight.   more ›

Second Hazing Investigation at Maine West Opened

After a lawsuit alleging sexual assault and hazing of a student was filed last week, D-207 launched another investigation--this time into a hazing incident that reportedly took place in 2008. It involved a coach also named in this month's lawsuit.

OUTSIDE CHICAGO, IL -- After a parent brought a hazing and sexual assault lawsuit against a Des Plaines high school last week, a second family stepped forward to allege their child was the victim of hazing on a sports team at the school.  The second family said their child was on the Maine West High School freshman boys' baseball team in 2008, when Michael Divincenzo was coach. D-207 has launched investigations into both sets of allegations. The 2012 lawsuit, filed on Nov. 19, named Divincenzo, along with other administrators, faculty, staff and the high school district, as being the responsible adults in charge when the hazing took place in September 2012. Their child was on a soccer team. On Monday, Nov. 26, Maine Township High School …

The parents are not to blame. They put their children in a sports program provided by the school and supervised by faculty. Unfortunately, the staff is immature and unprofessional. I don't know the MW faculty or coach Divo, however I do know for something like that to happen on school grounds under his supervision is disgusting, immoral, and unethical. Where is his integrity? Does the district …   more ›

@grandpa - As a senior you should get an exemption on your property taxes. The younger folks: those expecting kids, that have kids, or had kids recently in the school system have to pay full price since they do not qualify for the senior citizen exemption. So, sleep well my friend.   more ›

Summer School Enrollment Drops in Dist. 207

Some administrators cite costs to families as prohibitive factor.

Some students in Maine Township High School District 207 are not signing up for summer schools because they cannot afford it, administrators said at the school board meeting on Nov. 7. The number of students that took summer school classes dropped from 7,735 in 2008 to 6,769 in 2011 across the district, according to a report presented at the meeting. Over the three-year period all three high schools, Maine East and Maine South in Park Ridge and Maine West in Des Plaines, experienced reduced enrollments. Scholarships are available, but they don’t pay the full cost, and sometimes that’s not enough, said Barbara Dill-Varga, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. “Some of our students have to work, or perhaps they have to stay…
