Glenview School District 34 Responds To Connecticut School Shooting

D34 reminds parents to discuss the tragic news with children, keep homes safe and watch for signs of stress.

The following letter was provided by Glenview School District 34.  Dear District 34 Parents, We are deeply troubled to hear about a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school today. Sadly, the number of those who lost their lives has increased throughout the day at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. As of this report, there are accounts of approximately 30 dead, many of whom are elementary-age-students. The shooter is also reported to be dead. This is a stark reminder of the importance of our safety procedures and our check-in for all visitors to schools. While there is no indication that this is anything but an isolated incident far away from Glenview, we do want to take this opportunity to remind all of our families that we …

Glenview District 34 Revises Lunch Options

Meal guidelines have changed for the 2012 - 2013 school year in accordance with the USDA's Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.

The following school notes were provided by District 34. School meal guidelines have changed for the 2012-13 school year due to the passage of the USDA’s Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act. The school meals will follow the MyPlate model, which means students will be asked to choose a fruit or vegetable with their meal.      Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories. Additionally, the fiber in fruits and vegetables fills students up with healthy food so that students eat less of other foods. Therefore, including fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet can help students feel more satisfied after meals.  People who eat more generous portions of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet compared to those who only consume a small …

POLL: Does Departing D34 Supt. Shed Light on Problems in Pension System?

Gerald Hill will leave June 30th after eight years with the district. Hill is now eligible to collect his full Illinois pension, which he'll receive in addition to the $190,000 per year superintendent salary he recently accepted at a Michigan school.

Last week, soon-to-retire Supt. Gerald Hill told Patch about his reasons for leaving District 34 and taking a new position in West Bloomfield, Mich. “In my situation, I’m able to take advantage of retiring from the system and moving to another state," Hill explained. When Patch first reported Hill’s acceptance of the superintendent position in West Bloomfield, readers questioned, in the comments section, the pension he would receive from his time in Glenview and elsewhere. While West Bloomfield’s $190,000 salary will mean a pay cut from his current base salary of $270,000 with District 34, when Hill leaves Glenview, he will take with him a hefty pension from 16 years as part of the Illinois Teacher Retirement System. (He previously worked …

Glenview D34 Supports Anixter Tax Break

The middle school district joins D225 and village trustees in supporting an incentive plan which will save the Fortune 500 $2.6 million dollars in taxes over a 12-year period.

Glenview school District 34 is among the most recent tax-supported bodies to stand behind a property tax break for communications products giant Anixter to move into the Glen, according to Glenview Announcements. The building and four acres of land, 2591 Compass Rd., have been vacant since 1998. And, Anixter’s headquarters, which employs 670 and has been located in Glenview since 2002, is just west of the Compass Rd. space. Poll: Corporate Tax Breaks, Good for Glenview? Anixter was granted a 12-year tax reduction that officials anticipate will generate $1.6 million in added property taxes for the village and an additional 150 jobs, Glenview Announcements reports. Without the break, Anixter’s tax bill would have been $4.2 million during …

After accepting a position as superintendent of schools in West Bloomfield, Mich. last Saturday, Gerald Hill, 60, talked with Patch about the reasons for his departure from Glenview.   Several years ago, because of family circumstances that would take him out-of-state, Hill said he approached the Board in anticipation of parting ways with the district. “I had originally intended to stay through 68 [years old],” he said. “The board and I decided to instead work on a senior leadership transition, allowing us to bring a new team into the district.” Stay up-to-date on the latest Glenview news: Like us on Facebook!
