Athletes from Deerfield High School, Glenbrook South, New Trier, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame of Niles, Niles North, Glenbrook North, Maine East and Loyola competed for berths at the State Meet at the Niles West Sectional
Athletes from 17 area schools competed for berths in the State Track Meet during the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie. Take a look for your favorite athlete and see who is going to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Glenbrook South, New Trier, Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame, Niles North and Loyola athletes will join Wildkits at State Meet.
Taking home the team trophy for the sixth straight year, the Evanston High School boys track team won the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie sending five individuals and three relay teams to the State Meet May 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston The Wildkits compiled 85 points. Glenbrook South took home second place with 72 followed by Prospect in third with 70 and New Trier fourth with 58. Niles West accumulated 47 for fifth with Deerfield sixth, Main South seventh, Niles North eighth, Highland Park ninth place, Notre Dame of Niles tenth, Maine West 11th , Loyola Academy 12th, Maine East 13th\, Glenbrook North 14th and Von Steuben 15th. Freshmen and sophomores at the Glenbrook high schools will receive ChromeBook laptops for the next academic year.
Northbrook and Glenview schools are in the process of implementing the "one-to-one initiative" designed to provide students with a laptop or other device for enhanced learning, the Chicago Tribune reports. Among the students getting new devices are freshmen and sophomores at Glenbrook North and South, who will receive $828,000 worth of ChromeBook laptops in the upcoming school year, according to the Chicago Tribune. Glenbrook North High School alum Scott Adsit attended the foundation’s inaugural fundraiser on May 4.
Glenbrook North High School alum Scott Adsit, 47, who plays producer Pete Hornberger in the NBC comedy 30 Rock was among the more than 100 people who attended Glenbrook Foundation’s inaugural fundraiser called A Night with Glenbrook Theater on May 4, Chicago Tribune reported. Adsit went backstage before students from Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high schools performed West Side Story to wish cast members good luck. In 1984 the 30-Rock star took part in the production of same musical along with a few other alumni that were also present at the fundraiser, Chicago Tribune reported. Glenbrook High School District 225 spent $110,000 to open the kitchen lab in fall 2012.
After two years of planning, Glenbrook High School District 225 converted a Glenbrook North High School classroom and opened a state-of-the-art kitchen in the fall of 2012, where students can learn culinary skills in a restaurant-style setting, Chicago Tribune reported. The kitchen costs $110,000 to build and features stainless steel worktables, four ovens, commercial range, exhaust hood and one of the students and staff’s favorite feature—a camera set above one of the tables, which allows demonstrations to be projected onto a big screen, reducing the need for students to crowd around a table and making it easier for them to follow instructions, Chicago Tribune reported. Students from Glenbrook North and South will be performing for Scott Adsit, a GBN alum and comedy actor, during an opening weekend performance of the musical.
Glenbrook North alumnus, Scott Adsit, an actor on 30 Rock and numerous other TV shows, is expected to attend a performance of West Side Story, running through May 4 at Glenbrook South. Adsit played Arab when the District 225 musical was West Side Story while he was a GBN student in 1984. This year's musical will also be the last for Stevi Marks, a Glenbrook South music teacher, who is retiring after next year, according to the district. After 20 years of theater productions, variety shows and choir performances, Marks, who is directing West Side Story this year, will give one of her final bows when the show ends its run on May 4. Glenbrook South, New Trier and Glenbrook North high school students recently ordered 849 burgers and raised more than $800 in a day for Ronald McDonald House Charities.
About 120 students from New Trier Township High School, Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high schools recently gathered at Glenview’s McDonalds to gobble down some burgers all in the of charity and raised more than $800 in a day, Chicago Tribune reported. The 10th annual Burger Day raised money for Oak Brook-based Ronald McDonald House Charities and overall the team of students who organized the event raised about $74,000 throughout the year through company sponsorships, beating last year’s donation of $60,000, Chicago Tribune reported.

Glenbrook North High School student Duncan Coogan earned one of the three scholarships the Chicago Blackhawk Alumni Association awarded this year.
The Chicago Blackhawk Alumni Association recently awarded Glenbrook North High School senior Duncan Coogan a scholarship, which will help pay $5,000 toward his college tuition every year, Northbrook Star reported. The Association awarded Coogan one of the three scholarships it presented this year for the 17-year-olds good grades, character and community involvement with the Northbrook Blue Hawks, a traveling hockey team made up of fifth through seventh graders and Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that builds affordable housing for people in need, Northbrook Star reported. Jerome Hoynes, a social studies teacher at Glenbrook North High School was elected as New Trier Township Clerk in 2009.
Glenbrook North High School teacher Jerome Hoynes’ public service started long before he was elected New Trier Township Clerk in 2009, back in college he was appointed and elected as a city council alderman in Eureka, Ill., Wilmette Life reported. The social studies teacher who grew up in Winnetka and graduated from New Trier High School in 1985 says his job as a teacher and clerk fits perfectly because many of the functions that the clerk does are similar to that of a social studies teacher, for example, taking meeting minutes is recording, preserving or securing history, Wilmette Life reported.
