GBS beat Evanston 9 to 2 on Monday. They move onto the regional semifinals on Monday.
Glenbrook South beat Evanston Township High School 9-2 for the Central Suburban League South title on Monday, CSL Insider reports. "The wheels can fall off in the high school game and I think that happened to that Evanston pitcher today at the end. We've got the talent and the tools as a team, but if you don't stay calm and get rattled, you can cancel out that talent." Glenbrook South biology students cleared buckthorn at The Grove during a service-learning trip.
More than 300 Biology students at Glenbrook South High School participated in a service-learning experience at The Grove recently. The all day experience involved a biodiversity study of plant life in The Grove, coupled with the clearing of the invasive species buckthorn for eventual burning. The day began with students studying different types of plants in specific areas of The Grove that had been over grown with the invasive species. Buckthorn causes damage by crowding out other placid species and prevents for other, more beneficial, plants to grow. Similar to Glenbrook North, GBS students will have the option of taking eight classes over a two-day period, starting in 2014.
The 2014-15 school year will be an unusual one for Glenbrook South students — that's when the high school's new block scheduling model will take effect, according to the District 225 website. The revised schedule accommodates eight, 90-minute classes meeting over two days, instead of the current model of seven daily classes. "...our parents and students are highly supportive of the new initiative," GBS Principal Dr. Brian Wegley says on the district site. The district expects to hire five or six new teachers to accommodate the new scheduling, which has been in development since 2011.
