Glenview Girl

Motherhood: A Juggling Act

A Glenview mom inspires others, balancing two jobs, school and her family.

Every Sunday, the fitness studio at the Glenview Park Center starts to get really crowded around 10:00 a.m., 15 minutes before Box N Tone, a class that incorporates kickboxing, core work and strength training, begins. The reason it’s packed? The instructor, Kellie Kopach. More Glenview Girl: Local Mom Donates Cells to Save Son From Cancer “She’s motivating, she’s fun, and she never ever lacks energy,” said Sandy Sroubek, who does the class every week. “In the middle of class she shouts, ‘You’re not tired!’ She has passion and she passes that along to everyone else,” said Debbie Silver, another regular. Box N Tone is one of 18 fitness classes Kopach teaches per week. That’s right, 18 classes per week! But that’s not all she does. The forty-…

Do Si Do & Away They Go

Beginning square dance lessons at the Glenview Park Center have gathered some 17 students to try their hands (or feet!) at this most American of dances.

Do si do, allemande left and grand right and left are just a few of the words you’ll hear on Tuesday evenings at the Glenview Park Center now that Square Dance classes have launched. That, plus plenty of laughter. This week, some 17 students will again turn out to try their hand at square dancing. One new student, Judy Loebbaka of Skokie is a former roller skate-ballroom dancer who hung up her skates 10 years ago due to vertigo and was encouraged to try square dancing by a friend and long-time dancer. “I had a lot of fun,” Loebbaka said afterward. During the evening, she learned some 15 calls. Loebbaka and her fellow classmates will have their work cut out for them. Between September and April, they’ll be learning and practicing the nearly…

VIDEO: Participants Run, Swim & Bike to Triathlon Finish

More than 300 people participated in Glenview's annual sprint triathlon.

Like the rest of the country, Glenview residents are starting to get a dose of triathlon fever. More than 300 participants woke up early on Sunday morning to bike, run and swim in the Glenview Park District’s 10th annual sprint triathlon. Hosted at the Glenview Park District’s Park Center, this year’s triathlon featured a 300-yard swim followed by a 10-mile bike ride and a three-mile run. The Park District has kept the distances shorter to foster more participation from residents who haven’t tried a triathlon, explained Kathleen McInnis, manager of health and fitness at the Park Center.   Related: Athletes compete at indoor triathalon “The distances are perfect for those who are just getting started, and it’s also fun,” McInnis said. Power Out? Where to Stay Cool in Glenview

Patch has you covered with spots to escape the heat

After Tuesday morning’s storm left more than 4,600 Glenview residents without power, many are searching for respite from Chicago’s summer heat this afternoon. Thomas Place, an independent senior living facility on Patriot Boulevard north of West Lake Avenue, was still without power this morning, Village officials reported. Additionally, about 75 percent of The Glen Town Center was in the dark, too. “Most of the power outages are in central and east Glenview – in the areas at and around Wagner and Winnetka roads; Glenview and Wagner roads; and along and around Central Road from Milwaukee Avenue to Harlem Avenue,” Village Communication Director Lynne Stiefel said in an e-mail today. “Unfortunately, these appear to be roughly the same areas …
