Glenview Pools and Camps Heat Up Summer Vacation

Monday is the last day to buy early bird pool passes for Glenview's Flick and Roosevelt pools. Summer camp spaces are still available too.

Today is the last day to purchase Glenview Park District pool passes at a discounted, early bird rate.  2013 Outdoor Pool Membership Types and Fees * Additional Family Members must reside in same household as Individual member. ** Nanny Membership – Must be employed by a family holding a 2013 Outdoor Pool Membership. Must apply in person with the employing family and provide documentation of current employment. Nannies may not be counted as a family member on a family pass. Only one Nanny Membership per family. *** Senior Membership – Seniors passes are sold individually and can not be combined with an additional family member pass. Glenview Residents Help Clean Up Chicago River

Dozens of Glenview residents joined volunteers on May 11 to remove trash and invasive plants during the Chicago River clean up day.

  More than 80 Glenview residents helped clean up the Chicago River as part of Chicago River clean up day, where 4,000 volunteers removed trash and invasive plants at 70 river locations from the north to the south suburbs, Glenview Announcement reported.  The Glenview team worked on the West Branch of the North Fork in the Techny Basin, which serves as a naturalized storm water detention in Glenview, according to Henrietta Saunders, chairwoman of the Glenview Natural Resources Commission, Glenview Announcement reported.  Nearby are recreation trails that are part of the Bike Glenview program launched in April, which encourages biking around the village.  The initiative is a cooperative effort between the Village of Glenview, the Village’s …

Celebrity Pastry Chef Gale Gand Visiting Glenview

Gale Gand will be sharing dessert tips and signing copies of her cook books at the Glenview Senior Center on May 6.

Celebrity pastry chef, Gale Gand, will be making a special appearance at the Glenview Senior Center at 2400 Chestnut Ave., on Monday, May 6 from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Gand will offer some desserts tips and sign copies of her best-selling cookbooks, which will be on sale at the event.  Tickets are $5 and open to the public. Space is limited, advance registration is required.  The event is sponsored by Whitehall of Deerfield Healthcare Center. National 9 Golf Club Changes Name To Prairie Club

As the facility renovates to include paddle tennis courts, the Glenview Park Board approved to change the destination's name.

The Glenview Park Board has agreed to rename the National 9 Golf Club to Glenview Prairie Club to reflect the facility's upcoming paddle tennis courts that are currently under construction, according to a park district press release. “As we expand our customer base to include both golf and platform tennis enthusiasts, it made sense to rename National 9 Golf Club," Cheryl Doem, Superintendent of Special Facilities at Glenview Park District, said in the release. "We felt that Glenview Prairie Club reached both audiences in the community and is a solid foundation for us to build on." Dennis Downes Art Exhibit At The Grove

The Glenbrook North alum's 13th annual exhibit will run from March 21 through March 24 at The Redfield Estate in Glenview.

The following post was based on a Glenview Park District press release. The Redfield Estate at The Grove, 1421 Milwaukee Ave., will host a solo exhibit of original paintings and sculptures by internationally known Lake County artist Dennis M. Downes. The exhibit lasts from Thursday, March 21 through Sunday, March 24.  As a special feature of the show, there will be a comprehensive Trail Marker Tree exhibit on display based on Downes’ extensive research. Exhibit hours are from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. on March 21, 1:00 to 10:00 p.m. on March 22, 1:00 to 10:00 p.m. on March 23, and 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. on March 24. New Trier Students Test Underwater Robot at Glenview Park District Pool

The students are preparing for the Marine Advanced Technology Education underwater robotics competition on March 23.

  New Trier High School’s Robotics Club recently tested their underwater robot at the Glenview Park District pool in preparation for an underwater robotics competition on March 23, Chicago Sun Times reported.  Designed with PVC pipe, bilge pump propellers, an underwater camera and a claw arm to grab and move objects, the underwater robot will take part at the Marine Advanced Technology Education robotics competition, which is run through the Shedd Aquarium and held at University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago Sun Times reported.  For the full story, visit: Pioneerlocal.Suntimes.com Related School Coverage

Glenview Park District Honors Two Talented Swimmers

The district recently honored Olivia Smoliga, a senior at Glenbrook High School and Steve Iida, her coach at the Glenview Aquatic Titan Club.

  Glenview Park District honored Olivia Smoliga, senior at Glenbrook High School, and Steve Iida, her coach at the Glenview Aquatic Titan Club, during the Feb. 28 board meeting, Glenview Announcements reported.  Smoliga was given a plaque for winning the 100-meter backstroke at the World Short Course Championships in Istanbul on Dec. 15, 2012, while her coach was also recognized by the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association with a Community Service award, Glenview Announcement reported.  In 2012, Smoliga broke national records for 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.  Related Coverage

Glenview Park District Hires Paddle Tennis Pro

Tony Marino has been hired as the new head paddle tennis professional.

  Glenview Park District has tapped Tony Marino as the new head paddle tennis professional to oversee the platform tennis programs and all instructions when the new paddle tennis facility opens at Glenview National 9 Golf Club in April, according to the park district’s website.  A paddle tennis professional since 2006, Marino joins Glenview Park District from Valley Lo Sports Club in Glenview, where he served as director of racquet sports for the past seven years and oversaw the expansion of club’s expansion of men and women platform tennis programs.  Marino was the head tennis/platform professional and junior program coordinator at North Shore Country Club between 2001 and 2006.  The University of Iowa graduate has been playing tennis …
