The Illinois State Board of Health has approved new recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health and The Illinois Department of Education to require all sixth through twelfth grade students to have an additional vaccination. The students will now need to show proof of receiving the Tdap booster shot. The vaccine immunizes against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. “We’ve seen an increase in pertussis, or whooping cough, in Illinois during the last six years. Medical experts have found whooping cough has been on the rise in pre-teens and teens, indicating a waning immunity from infant and childhood immunizations,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck in a press release. Chicago ranked second last year for bed bug infestations. Experts attribute the rise to global travel; more garage sale and thrift store exchanges; and increased visits between homes and public spaces.
Bed bugs, according to their name, ought to be relegated to mattress pads and box springs. But alas, because there is a spike in bed bugs across the country, the opportunities to bring home the blood-sucking insects are increasingly prevalent on public transportation. "They are transported through public transportation," said Curt Colwell, an etymologist at the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in Springfield. "They move from buses to planes to trains to taxis. It's pretty common." State health officials close school pool, plus several hotel and residential facilities.
Update, Oct. 6 at 4:40 p.m. Glenbrook South's six-lane pool is open for swimming after the Health Department shut it down earlier this week. "We just received word that the GBS small pool is cleared to open," said Karen Geddeis, director of communications for the District. "They will resume swimming activities in that pool immediately." Earlier-- State health officials have closed a pool at Glenbrook South High School, saying the school failed to prove they've complied with a new state safety standard.
