Glenview’s Board Agrees to Pursue Electrical Aggregation

The village could partner with Wilmette and Kenilworth to reduce costs.

After hearing presentations about the costs and benefits of electricity aggregation, the Glenview Board of Trustees unanimously voiced their support for moving forward with the process at Tuesday’s workshop. Formal approval will be discussed at a later meeting. Deputy Village Manager Don Owen explained the process, which allows communities to pool their residential and small business electrical needs to seek bids for power. If voters approved an electricity aggregation referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot, all residents would automatically be added to the pool unless they chose to opt out. Don't miss a thing: Sign up for our free newsletter! “If we control the bids through an aggregation process we think we can get savings,” Owen said. “However…

Cummings on Memorial Day: 'Honoring Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice'

Glenview Village President Kerry Cummings shares her thoughts on remembering war veterans.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “the price of Liberty is eternal vigilance.” Our freedoms, our liberties were bought and paid for by the men and women who have died in service to our country. These brave men and women gave their lives in pursuit of that eternal vigilance.  It is through their sacrifice that we enjoy our liberties, our freedoms today. Memorial Day is a day the nation sets aside to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to establish, maintain and preserve the freedoms that we so enjoy. It is to remember those who fought to form this country, to lay the foundation for our freedoms. It is to remember those who fought in our civil war, a war that expanded freedoms.  It is to remember those who fought in Europe and in the …

Village Hears Plans for ComEd Service Improvements

The utility tells trustees how it plans to improve its service following last summer's fiasco

Time has a way of cooling anger and venom. And that certainly applies to Commonwealth Edison--even with irate customers who lost power last summer. However, the issue of system reliability has not been forgotten and continues to be addressed. Village Board Poised to Cut Library Funding

Dispute continues between trustees and library board over 2012 budget.

The Glenview Village Board came a step closer to forcing the Library Board to use its own money to service its debt rather than rely on funds from the Village’s general fund at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.  At its last meeting Oct. 18, the Board suggested the Library pay $488,000 of its debt service from its reserves rather than Glenview’s general fund. Library President M. David Johnson was strongly opposed and remained so Tuesday.  “As a Village Board you have the authority to reduce the library’s tax levy by fiat,” Johnson said. “Should you elect to do so the library will have to reduce its budget to match the reduced levy. Please don’t make the mistake of assuming the budget will automatically be a reduction of our fund …

Village Board, Library Clash on Fund Balance

Trustees want library to operate with less.

A dispute over prudent stewardship of taxpayer dollars broke out between the Glenview Village Board and the Library Board of Trustees Tuesday night when Library Board President M. David Johnson presented his 2012 budget.  After Johnson presented his plan and Village Trustees asked questions about revenue and expenses Trustee Deborah Karton asked Johnson about using some of the library’s reserves to reduce taxpayer burden.  “Can you take $250,000 from your fund balance as an offset to the permanent fund?” Karton asked. With that, Village President Kerry Cummings asked if the contribution would keep the Library Board within its standard of a fund balance between 40 to 50 percent. The balance would be reduced to 39 percent. The Village and …
