Tragedy Inspires Compassion, Random Acts of Kindness

GBN and friends of the Garrity family are working together to honor the three young men who passed away this summer. Here, more on how you can give back and get involved.

An online fundraising website has already collected more than $5000 for the William "Billy" Garrity Scholarship Fund, just two weeks after friends of the Garrity family came up with the idea and launched the site.  Sign up for the Glenview Patch free morning newsletter to get the latest community stories delivered to your email.  “We were trying to think of ways to help out with the Garrity family and all that’s happened in the last couple weeks in Northbrook, so I created this page to raise money for the scholarship fund that they’re starting up at Glenbrook North," said Daniel Malter, 21, a Glenbrook North alumnus and friend of the Garrity family who created the online fundraiser. “We didn’t want to do something too extreme so that the …

Northbrook, Glenview Residents Discuss Grief and Suicide at Community Meeting

According to Northbrook Village President, "Northbrook can and will recover" from the recent tragedies.

There were no outbursts, no shocking revelations about the recent tragedies in Glenview and Northbrook. On Wednesday night, hundreds of people filled Glenbrook North's Sheely Center to quietly reflect on the past and hear expert advice on grief management, the statistical realities of suicides in Illinois and how to communicate with loved ones during periods of emotional hardship. They gathered in the wake of a string of recent tragedies, including two suicides of young men in Northbrook, the death in a car accident of a Glenbrook North student, the train derailment and bridge collapse that killed a Glenview couple, the drowing death of a 4-year-old Glenview boy, and the sudden death from an illness of a GBN special education teacher. The …

Northbrook's Tight Grip

Sudden losses center a community, reveal ties.

Hurt.   It is a theme that has paraded itself around our town recently, as family and friends grieved the loss of loved ones. And all people could ask is, “why?” Of course, there is not one simple answer or reason. Why should our brother, sister, neighbor, friend, grandchild, be snatched away without warning? There is no consolation for that. And frankly, I’m in no position to speak about it. What do I know about the topic? An 18-year-old writer, witnessing the tragedies around her in complete awe. At first, I shied away from the topic--it was one that I didn’t want to touch upon because I didn’t know how. This doesn’t happen. Well, this doesn’t happen here. But the more I thought about this article, the more there was one aspect I could …

Car Crash Kills Glenbrook North Student

Kyle Caraher was an honor roll student and football player.

A 17-year-old Glenbrook North High School senior died after his car collided with an SUV Monday afternoon.  Kyle Caraher was driving to his friend's house in Wisconsin where his family was vacationing at about 1 p.m. when the crash occurred, the Columbia County Sheriff's Department stated in a press release. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Wisconsin police say Caraher's car was traveling north on a country road and failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle was hit by an SUV travelling east at the intersection.  The SUV driver suffered minor injuries. The sheriff's department said speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash. “We are devastated beyond words," Glenbrook North Principal Paul Pryma said. "Kyle was a strong, …
